AI not using the Warmup Rule
My favorite way to play is to manage my team by playing each game and not simulating the games. It would be a great enhancement for those who manage the games, to have the AI use the warmup rule for relievers. There are plenty of times where I get burned on decisions to pitch or walk the 8th place hitter (not knowing if anyone is warming up in the AI bullpen) or when I bring in a pinch hitter in a lefty / righty decision only to have the AI match my move with the appropriate lefty / righty pitcher.

If this is implemented in OOTP, the critique of AI warmups here in the forum will make the critique Buck Showalter had to endure after not using his closer seem like a mild disagreement about a fair move that unfortunaletly didnt work out.

Though I would like to know who the opposing team has ready to face my hitters, I'll conceed this advantage to the AI

Because the AI doesn't use it, I typically turn it off for myself.

Worked fine in HardBall, complete with a little shot of the guy warming up so you could mess with the computer manager with pinch hitters. Absent that I turn warmups off too.

I believe other baseball simulators have gotten this done ok over the years. FBS comes to mind...so does Tony LARussa 1996...these are titles from more than 20 years ago.

It's not about programming the feature, It's about how easy it is to program the AI to be prepared for all the options I need.
Lets say you're in a tied game bottom 7 and your starter is finally wavering, back to back walks. You're deciding to warm up your lefty setupmen, not your stopper, cause by the time he's ready, you'll probably be in a lefty part of the lineup. You're also decided to warm up a long reliever, cause if someone clears the bases you want a scrub to eat innings. But the AI sees "tied game, 7th inning, warm up the setupman" and "possible high leverage situation, warm up the stopper" - reasonable, but can the AI know like a human does that both of those are pretty interchangeable to your team? I doubt it does. And now the next batter gets on and the 2nd hits a bases clearing double and now the AI enters the setupmen down by 3 and you're wondering WTF it is doing. |

Programming reality is hard.
When a new pitcher is brought in, you can call for a pinch hitter right then and there. No point in pitching around a batter before the pitcher in a late game, as 99% of the time there’s a PH coming in for the RP. See what batter comes to face your reliever and then make the switch. |
