choosing players
when you draft a player and it shows their potential at 3 stars, what are the chances in making him into a 5 star player or is it luck that, it culd happen...im not sure on any successful tactics when it comes to finding a potential star player,,,can you steer me in the correct direction?

It's almost entirely luck. Work ethic and/or intelligence may play a small factor. Your development budget might matter a little. Finally, good coaches probably increase your chances marginally.

A 3 star potential player can become a very productive major league player. When you get away from the early rounds of the draft, consider what your organizational weakness/shortages are. i.e. Not enough left handed pitchers, too few catchers? Draft some. When getting deep in the draft I look for players who have plus MLB level attributes or potential, even if the rest of their ratings look bad. For example, a 2 star potential OF who is already very fast/high baserunning and range rating but poor offensive potential otherwise. If you add in that he's a switch hitter, I think that there's at least a chance this guy could eventually contribute. Last, don't overlook the statistics, particularly WAR when considering a player's potential. |

I think someone mentioned that the stats for the draft pool, unless you're using feeder leagues, are mostly cosmetic. Assuming that is the case, I wouldn't put much stock into it. Work ethic and intelligence are a priority for me, though.
When I'm trying to make a decision between two players that are similarly rated, I try to find the player that will best fit my team's philosophy. For batters, I tend to focus on defense and speed as my "tie breakers." Both of these serve a purpose - even if it's as defensive replacements/backups or pinch runners. Further growth in their other tools (hit, power, etc.) only makes them even more valuable. For pitchers, I try to emphasize ground ballers. However, there aren't a ton of those available via the draft. I also focus on stuff over control. I've historically had better luck developing control than developing stuff, so that is probably why. I don't really have a single "tie breaker" for pitchers, but I will sometimes draft them based on their individual pitches being an indicator of their future stuff. I'm not sure if that's beneficial or not. Last edited by koolkerns101; 03-27-2020 at 10:16 AM. |
