Help Me Negotiate in OOTP 21
Free Agent signings. Contract Extensions. Draft Pick Offers. We all have to perform these tasks and I'm hoping some of you can give me a few ideas on how to lessen the blows inflicted onto my Owner's checkbook.
I've only completed four MLB seasons in my OOTP career. 1981 through 1984. So, I'm not dealing with the monster contracts that I always see people talking about. Still, a budget is a budget and the OOTP George Steinbrenner is not the free-wheelin' money spender I remember in real life.
Let's say it is time to negotiate a contract extension, the player on your team will tell you a dollar amount and duration that he claims will lead to him re-signing with your team. And, let's say he's a good player, someone I don't want to lose, but certainly not a 4-Star stud. Perhaps he messages ya he wants an extension and then says "I'm thinking a 6-year deal with an average yearly value of $100,000." So, that would be a contract with a total value of $600,000. What would you suggest I do in this situation besides hitting Meet Demand? I don't know OOTP well enough yet, so I don't know if I come back with an offer of 4-years @ $75,000/yr, for a total contract value of $300,000 will he give me the finger and refuse to negotiate any further? That has happened to me already when I was trying to sign a couple of 2-Star RP Free Agents mid-season. One pitcher wanted $190,000/yr and I only offered $150,000. He threw a fit and refused to have any further dealings with me LOL -- he most likely would have been a post-season release, so I wasn't looking to spend, ya know?
One trick I've learned that I think is helping my side of the signing desk is option year(s). Let's use that same player example from above. The player wants 6-years, $100k/season, $600K total. Maybe he's on the wrong side of 30 and I have his replacement in my farm system, so I can't go over 4-Years. I'll write up the deal at 6-Years for $100K per season, but I will make the last 2 seasons Team Options! Of course, I'm going to have to obligate my club to a buyout amount, but if my prospect is ready the money will be well spent. How much money would you offer a player for a buyout amount using those same terms as the example?
How about the First Year Draft Picks? I watched a video yesterday that finally got through to me so I shouldn't blow this year's draft like I did last year. How do you handle those greedy little punks when they're not labeled Impossible or Very Hard/Hard? I know the draft itself is a whole 'nuther game, but negotiations are negotiations, right? ::GULP::
So, if you have any advice about negotiations, so I'm not always clicking "Meet Demand" and getting hosed, I would really appreciate it guys. Or if you have anything you'd like to say that would be great too!! George is giving me less money this year so I need to tighten the purse strings.
