When the rosters expand does the players on the 40-man roster automatically get promoted and when the playoffs begin they get demoted?

No, you decide who plays on the expanded roster. This year the roster only expands two players compared to the past.

Why does it only expand two players? Thats why it was throwing me off.

That’s the new rule. Rosters only expand to 28 in September.
