Closer's position changed from CL to MR

I've seen this a number of times now, over a few years of a sim league: my team's Closer has his position changed to MR (Middle Reliever) and random times. I just happen to spot it every so often, but can't figure out the consistent pattern. I haven't moved him out of the closer spot all year. He has 30+ saves, so he's been doing the closers job. Yet his position gets changed.

I guess I should just leave it alone - he'll be a lot cheaper to resign as a MR.

Actually, this is a new feature. The AI chooses its closer from the reliever/closer crew and do the required changes. You won't see the AI teams having a scrub pitcher at the closer slot only because he has the "closer" tag anymore. I don't know why you have that happening in your team (human), unless you had it on computer mode or let the AI generate the staff at some point.

EDIT. Also, I wouldn't make much noise about your closer not asking for big bucks given his new MR "tag". If I remember correctly, the game looks at the number of saves now in order to ask for money instead of the tag itself.

Not true, simple to observe too. Take a Closer in his last year of a contract, and see what his asking price is for an extension. Then switch him to MR and ask again. You'll see his number goes down (at least that's what I'm seeing, every time). I've also noticed that the same guy at MR will be rated 1/2 star higher than at CL.

Well, one out of three: Or I don't remember correctly or this was changed at some point or isn't working as it was supposed. All in all, saves should be taken into account, otherwise it would be just another exploit.

In general the "primary position" field gets too much attention from the game logic, in various areas including lineup selection, trades, and the aforementioned pitching issue.

I think the game would benefit if the logic just ignored what is set in this field, and relied on the rest of the information that we know about the player.
