Season 39 (2057) - Discussion Thread
The Raccoons swept their way to the WS last season, but I slept through the rest. Same result as the year before... We lost in 6 to a superior team.
This year we find ourselves in an unusual league. Besides the Raccoons, there's only 1 other team with a perfect championship, the Austin Fellwalkers who have only 1. We're also the only team with a greater than .600 career WPct (.679). So either we'll get our 9th this year or there's a really good chance someone will get their 1st (though Austin, in the other conference, will be tough to beat). Good luck to everyone in the coming season!

If this week is gonna be the week for the Steelport Saints, they will probably have to get by the La Crosse Fighting Frogs on Sunday night. That is, unless the other two former perfect champions in my conference have something to say about it (which they will). Spare a thought for my New York Patriots, who have finally made it to perfect, and will get annihilated by said Fighting Frogs all season long.

The quest to win three perfect titles in a row by my Tassie Thunder has been dealt two probably fatal blows. We have been drawn in the same conference as two true whales. The Singapore Sluggers with 14 titles and the Everitt Aqua Sox with 19. These teams are stacked. The only saving grace, being that they are in the same division, in a Moby Dick versus Moby Dick titanic struggle. The wild card is to be avoided at all costs...

I was feeling pretty good about the Wonder Dogs chances as I made my way through the American Conference, and only found two other Perfect League title winners. The 40+ rings in the National Conference have me lowering expectations a bit.

The Wey-Yu Xenomorphs stayed put and are in a Perfect League that features only 1 PL title holder, the Berlin Crab Shuckers. Seems unbelievable but it's true. Of Diamond League title holders, there's plenty, making me think this is kind of a de facto in-between tier that's needed between Diamond and Perfect. But hey, a Perfect League title is a Perfect League title and here's another golden opportunity for the Xenos. Hopefully, SP Tommy Bridges' remarkable half-season last week wasn't a fluke.
The Setagaya Wind-Up Birds untied the purse strings and lured SP Mike Scott for a year or two or a lifetime. This pretty much prevents us from making any more AH moves this week. There's been grumblings that Ken Griffey Jr. is getting antsy and may take his 30 HR / 6. Despite his reliable defense and homers, when I look at Junior, all I see these days are dollar signs. But then again, Junior's the only player I have that's also on Sebatus' End Game Cards list! Mike Scott played incredibly well for me in PT19 and, despite actively trying to do something different in PT20, here we go again. P412 features 12 PL titles, half belong to fellow AC East team Groom Lake Aliens, who unfortunately are in my division.

My Chiles started 1-7 and I have an even run differential.
6 1-run losses and my 1 win was 15-2

Here is the pile of disappointments.
Coons have another treacherously easy division, while KC should not really go anywhere... The Accountants also have some turnover, making McGraw, Matlack, Mays available for other people's collections. Since I never have that big of a card stash I couldn't patch the holes very well yet, but I sold a few things and have some coins to play. Pete Alexander is also new on the Opening Day roster, but was added over Walker Buehler at the end of last season.

Since there was a bunch of new SE 100 David Cone cards in the auction house, I decided to pick one up for 40k. Did I overpay? Maybe (nobody had bought one yet.)
But now my Fort Jefferson Pirates can post a 1-2-3 of 100 Feller, 100 Gibson, and 100 Cone. It's a nice punch in my opinion. |

Well the Totallers are off to their worst start in the last month after multiple postseason apperances, at 3-18...several teams in the division with 100s across the board almost. I'll be happy if i finish above the bottom 4.
Edit: Oh, just realized all 3 teams in same league. For the record, they're all linked not to each other, but to a friend of mine who made the PL for the first time this week. Woohoo, go Warhawks. We can all enjoy the bottom of the league this week. :\

P433: Bring Balance to the League
Every division in P433 boasts at least one team with a Perfect League championship; suffice it to say, this is going to be a tough league, no matter how hot one starts. (More on that later...)
The 6-time (yay!) Perfect League champion Huntley Red Raiders are in the AC Central; we are the only team in the division with a PL title. The AC East boasts fellow 6-time PL champ Haledon Glaziers (most recent title: 2054). And the AC West has 2 multi-PL champions: the Pittsburgh RedSox (3 PL titles, most recently 2055) and the St George Slammers (2 PL titles, most recently 2053--and also a Perfect League series defeat at the hands of the Red Raiders back in 2046...which I'm sure they've forgotten about and/or forgiven us for, right?). The AC promises to be a battle all the way through the Sub-League Series! Meanwhile, the NC East plays host to the most decorated team in P433: the Slumberton Slumlords, proud owners of 9 PL championships, including last season. They share the NC East with the Weston Pointe Caspers-FTP, who won a PL title back in 2042, have made the PL playoffs each of the last 6 seasons, and won 116 games last season. The NC Central is the home of the 2-time PL champion Perugia Warriors (2039, 2046), managed by frequent forum contributor moalkha. Finally, in the NC West, the Snaggletown Seawolves earned a PL medallion in 2054. Here are the current standings, which I will present without comment because I don't want to jinx anything and also because the Red Raiders are clearly peaking too early and it will never be this good again and, aw, forget it, this is awesome and I'm going to enjoy it while it lasts!! |

The Frogs, losers of the 2056 AC Divisional series, are in P452 this week.
The 2057 season continues the new-age tradition of the Frogs being placed in the same division as the most-decorated other team. I mean, in 2054 the Frogs finished with 120 wins; in 2056 the Frogs notched 124 wins. They did not win their division either time. This time, we've been placed in the same division as that Kyary Pamyupamyurin team that likes to have a teenage Japanese girl/pop star as its avatar. Odd though this team may be, they do have 5 PL titles to their credit. So far so good, though, as the Frogs pulled an early 4-game sweep and have an early 5.5 game lead over K.P. Other than the Frogs' own division, there are 3 PL titles spread over 2 teams. The Chiba Lotte Marines (2) and the Bat Cave Bat Chain Pullers (1). P452 also looks like a repository for international teams. Looking at the roster of teams, we have Japan (2), South Korea (2), Germany (2), Canada (2), Australia, Spain, and Hong Kong (I only learned Hong Kong after looking it up...white lotus blossom-looking thingy on red backdrop). So, the Frogs are going all USA! USA! USA! USA! mode this week. Other teams I recognize: New York Patriots and Steelport Saints are 2 of Magus' roughly one million PT teams. The Patriots have double jumped from gold-->diamond-->perfect over the previous 2 weeks and will be in the La Crosse/Kyary division. Steelport, the stronger of Magus' 2 teams in this league, will have to deal with the Chiba Lotte/Bat Cave duo. I think they can win the division--they won 114 games last week which is very good. Watch out for the Marines pulling the LHB/RHB strategy. The Frankenthal Paletines (Germaniac) and Guelph Gryphons Red (Dunzie) are teams of fellow OOTP board-walkers that I recognize. As for the Frogs...I am expecting something of a down week as I opted for some additional defense at the expense of offense. Yelich, Berra, Sisler, Randolph, and Fielder head to the bench. SE Stuffy Stirnweiss gets his first playing time. Garry Maddox and Johnny Pesky are back! Blast from the past! SE Lance Parrish and his 120-rated catcher defense will be backing up SE I-Rod and his 115-rated catcher defense. 100 SE Richie Ashburn and 96 SE Tim Salmon are both joining the roster as well after completing the Phillies and Angels collections, respectively. Super Ashburn kicks SE Dykstra off the roster (for good?) and Salmon will share DH duties with 100 Barry Bonds.

The Frogs ended the night playing some pretty meager baseball: 6-7 in their final 13 contests. The 39-16 overall mark looks a bit stronger and is currently good for a 5.5 game division lead over K.P.
As feared, some of the roster changes have given the team a flat tire. I was going for an ultra-defense 2.0 setup this week. Ivan Rodriguez (115) and Lance Parrish (120) give me dual right-handed catchers. Cal Ripken Jr. (111), Johnny Pesky (117), Stuffy Stirnweiss (121), Ozzie Smith (120), and Luke Appling (82) are playing 1B, 2B, 2B, SS, and 3B respectively. Appling being the "weak" link there. Rickey Henderson (111), Richie Ashburn (99), and Ichiro (117) are manning the OF. So, we're 2nd in DEff, ZR, and errors. 1st in runs allowed (169 runs over 55 games). But, playing Ripken Jr., Henderson, and this catching tandem against RHP is causing the offense to be very meh. Henderson is on pace to steal 82 bases even though he's batting .207. So, that's fun at least. Hopefully we set a runs allowed record this week. The franchise record is 432. We're on pace for about 498, so that's not particularly promising. Next week, I'm thinking about trying righty-masher mode. I figure I've added some good cards lately to try it. SE Dick Allen, SE Tim Salmon, SE David Wright, SE Carl Furillo, SE Sherry Magee, SE Greg Luzinski, SE Mike Schmidt, SE Larry Hisle, SE Bobby Bonds. 100 Jimmie Foxx from a tournament reward pack. 90 Kevin Mitchell, 96 Mark McGwire, 96 Rogers Hornsby, 96 Gavvy Cravath, and 95 Jeff Kent purchased for various missions. Problem is only so many of them can play 1B/LF/DH.

My Coney Island Warriors who have been in Perfect since 2022 won their 3700th game to close out the day yesterday but are still in search of their first title at any level. Twenty nine playoff appearances have yet to win them a title. Only four trips to the WS, twice blowing three games to one leads.
Being promoted to perfect after the 2021 season that saw me not even qualify me for the playoffs hurt. I ignored the team (outside of checking pitching staff Monday and Sunday) for months and finally started to make some changes. It would be a great Christmas gift to finally win one for Coney Island. All my other teams have won at least once, but I need one for my original team. |

Does "specialist" just not work in the pitching depth chart? I set SE DiPino there and he faced one batter over a month yesterday with a standard 6 man bullpen.
I'm not looking thru all the box scores but I'm sure my team came up against more than one lefty hitter in the late innings. |

For best results set to middle relief and specialist as a second choice.

One, the "specialist" designation doesn't work very well by itself. As mentioned, it's best to give another role as well. Whether that's specialist/middle relief or middle relief/specialist. Second, if your starting rotation is stacked, then there might not be enough work for 6 relief pitchers. What I've learned to do is identify which one is the "odd man out" and not getting any appearances and then set him to "use more often." This tends to level the usage out somewhat.
