How to Get the Substitution System Working Properly?

So I'm trying to get my substitution setup working properly, and the game is not following my logic. Basically with efficient subs, my goals are:

1. Ensure some regular rest for players so everybody isn't tired at the same time.
2. Have right-handed hitters mostly do their resting against right-handed pitchers, and vice versa for lefties.
3. Have players play in their optimal position on the field.

So I've attached two photos on my setup, first against RHP, second against LHP. Take for example my outfield:

LF: Barry Bonds
CF: Al Kaline
RF: Ken Griffey Jr.
4OF: Mike Cameron

Because Bonds and Griffey are lefties, I want them resting against LHP. And I want Kaline resting against RHP. And because Cameron is the best fielder, I want him playing CF whenever possible.

So the biggest problem happens against LHP... when I try to have Cameron in CF, Kaline in LF, and Griffey and Bonds alternating in RF 50/50. The game doesn't understand that I want them to alternate, and thinks the "every 2nd game" means overall, not just against LHP. So Bonds ends up having way more at-bats than Griffey.

How do I beat the system into submission?

Wait a minute: you're saying that if I pick "every 2nd game" on the vs LHP lineup, it uses that guy every second game regardless as to the pitcher being faced? I never thought to check that to make sure it worked as expected.

From what I gather, it doesn't use him regardless of pitcher being faced... but it makes that "every 2nd game" decision based on all pitchers faced. So what happens in my case is Bonds faces every LHP, unless there's a rare case where my team faces 2 LHPs in a row.

Yep that's how it works. Changed all my utility starts to 'if starter tired' because of this, otherwise you'll end up with too many unintended LHB facing LHP.

That is disappointing to know. I always thought every X game would be every X game vs LHP lineup.

The game looks at Bonds vs. LHP and checks to see if he has played RF in the last two games (regardless of the opposing pitcher's handedness). If Bonds has not played RF in the past two games, he plays. If you set Bonds to every 6th game or so, you will get something closer to what you want.

Yeah, that's what I gather. I'll set Bonds to every 6th or 7th game. But that still doesn't give me what I really want: Griffey and Bonds alternating evenly. If I happen to face more LHP than expected during the week, this will mess my whole system up.

And that still doesn't address my desire to have everyone in the best position. Say if I face nothing but RHP for a whole month, eventually Bonds and Griffey will get tired and Cameron will come in. I'd like Cameron to go to CF and slide Kaline over, but there's no way to do that.

OOTPD, please give us more control over the substitution system.

If you make Kaline the sub for lf/rf then it would do that part of what you want. That was new in ootp20.

The other one is a tougher problem just due to logistics and how far back we have to look to find games. But something we can look into some more.

The biggest problem I experience with position player fatigue is that they are always at 100% until 1 day when 5 guys at once are too tired to play.

Yeah, that method could work for the RHP lineup, and get Cameron in CF more often. But that's not as big of a deal to me as the LHP lineup issue. Previously I've tried this method:

LF: Bonds, Utility: Cameron (Ev. 2nd Game)
CF: Kaline, Utility: Cameron (Starter Tired)
RF: Griffey, Utility: Cameron (Ev. 2nd Game)

This doesn't use Cameron in CF, but I thought it would rotate him in LF/RF against every LHP. But what happens is either Bonds or Griffey still gets a lot more at bats than the other. So the system just picks the first on the list to rotate or something, I dunno what it does.

Nice to hear that you guys will look at it.

Given that perfect team has no injuries to worry about, I'd like to just be able to use the "7-day lineups" for an entire month with the ability to set two lineups for lefty/righty plus an override for players that end up tired

Woah! Enlightening thread. No wonder my platoons haven't been getting the splits I'd expect. I thought it was just because of people favoring handedness matchups with their pens.

More control (so we can do what Argo is asking for) would be great.
