long reliever
is there an advantage or disadvantage to having a long reliever, and if so, should this be a starter ? geuss I should have asked this about 15 seasons ago

The long reliever won't tire as quickly (but I assume doesn't get as much of the "reliever" bonus). Basically, they should be able to go 3-4 innings whereas most other relief positions will tire after 1 or 2.

The main benefit of a long reliever is performing mop up duty in blowouts ("avoid high leverage"). This can save the rest of your bullpen so they are better rested in the higher leverage situations.
Everyone should do that during the playoffs at minimum, because you don't need 5 starters. Whether or not dedicating a roster spot for the regular season is worth it, I'm not as sure. |
