I own OOTP 4, must I pay full price for 5 ?
Most companies don't charge full price for a new version of their software if you own the previous version. Maybe I haven't figured this out, but it seems as though .400 software expects full price for version 5, is this the way it is ?

Yers, it is full price for OOTP5 even if you owned any previous versions.

I don't know...EA, Sierra, Maxis, 3DO, UBI Soft, Raven, etc... have always charged me full price for the next year's version.
If you have been getting games from said companies at a discount, would you please be so kind as to tell me (and others here) how?

Hmm ok -
I haven't bought many sports games before, so I guess I am just not accustomed to the practice. Examples of programs I buy that give a discount for an upgrade: 1. Windows and other Office components 2. Adobe Photoshop 3. Various other photographic imagery related software True - no games there - perhaps that is the dividing line. |

mpolhill, I think there's a basic general difference in upgrade pricing strategies between productivity software and entertainment software. The only time I can recall being able to get any kind of discount on entertainment software was when I registered certain EA Sports games. When the new year's version came out I'd receive a coupon in the mail (or by e-mail) for $10-$15 off. I'm not certain whether they still do that or not.
Anyway, imo OOTP5 is worth every penny. I would happily pay $50 or more for it (but don't tell Markus or Steve).

Well...The standard practice with sports games is this (of any type)
The game gets released at full price..usually somewhere between 29.99-49.99..(I'm not including DM or Strat..season disks raise it up alot higher.). The games stay that way for the next 8-10 months...as the new version is drawing closer it is standard practice to lower the price...allowing some last minute sales and for over the shelf games, a chance for retailers to make room for the new versions. Even though OOTP is a online game and they don't really have to deal with some of those issues but yet they have the last two years I know reduced it to 19.95. |

Stick with OOTP4 for the time being, IMO OOTP5 isn't worth the money. It's more of an upgrade than a new version and has taken backward steps in some areas.

Wrong ... OOTP5 is a major upgrade if only for the html reports .... by the way with ootp5 upgrades are free, Markus usually does 2 or 3 per version ... so you get a huge discount on updates, what you are paying for is a new version

ootp5
I would suggest looking at other baseball sims, I know this is for ootp5, but baseball mogul is a great game, and it is only $19.99, now that isn't that bad, A friend of mine owns ootp5 and regrets that he bought it so soon because it is 35 bucks and it is more if you get the cd....but he also said that ootp5 is a great game, and is a great upgrade from last years version. If I were you I would keep playin ootp4, untill the price drops. or try another baseball sim, by the way baseball mogul is a totally different game than ootp, IT IS NOT A MICROMANAGEMNT game. I hope this helps

OOTP5 is to Baseball Mogul what Barry Bonds is to Mario Mendoza.
For those of you who do not know who Mario Mendoza is, shame on you. Imagine a lighter-hitting Rey Ordonez. |

I hope you're kidding. Baseball Mogul and ootp5 aren't even close in depth. Two totally different games, imo. Mogul's for the casual gamer, ootp is for the baseball enthusist. $35 for a deep baseball sim, easily cheaper than most games out there today. I think it's a nice upgrade from v4, if you have the cash, get v5. Todd |

Best money I ever spent: Buying OOTP5. And I'll be first in line to buy OOTP6. And v7. And beyond.
While it isn't a huge improvement over OOTP4, it has a lot of niceties that v4 doesn't have. And Manager Mode is great! I honestly don't understand how anyone can compare Baseball Mogul to OOTP. The two aren't even in the same ballpark. Pardon my pun

The eye candy has tripled the size of the site generated compared with OOTP4, there have been problems with coverting from OOTP4 to 5, I just don't believe it is as great a step forward as others.

I think that, overall, it depends on what the guy who started the thread thinks about text based baseball. If he is a fanatic, he should probably upgrade, because OOTP5 is better than OOTP4. If he is more of a casual gamer, he should probably hold off, there really is not that much there for the average gamer to make it worth the price of the upgrade, IMHO. I really think that after this version, OOTP needs to go through some serious changes. I wonder how long people will continue to pay full price from what basically amounts to being the same game, albeit with some "bells and whistles" attached. If people continue to put down full price for the same engine, then the OOTP people never really have a reason to really put the time and effort into putting out a new game, from a financial POV. Hopefully Markus proves me wrong and releases a brand new OOTP with a brand new "engine" and I end up looking like an @$$hole. |

Converting has been somewhat of a disappointment, but other than that it is a vast improvement over OOTP4.

how in the heck can people think that there is not much improvement over version 4?? Have you not seen things like power rankings, top prospects rankings, minor league system rankings, the almanac, ability to change draft dates, etc. etc. ????? All the improvements were listed before the game came out, if you don't want to buy it don't, if you do then buy it.

At 9.5 cents per day, there's nothing else I know of that can provide such inexpensive entertainment - period. If you really fee $35 a year is too much, I have to think your expectations per dollar are way higher than most but you certainly have a right to that opnion.
