Maximum Reserves? Lost draft pick

I was playing an historical game starting 1900, so I have my active roster and reserves. I have now had two separate games in which my 1st round (and subsequent round) picks did not appear on my roster. The player shows as drafted, signed, but as a free agent with no team. Playing through to the next year, he still appears as a free agent but can't be signed or drafted. The player (Lou Gehrig!) is lost to the game.

When it happened I noticed that my reserve roster had 170 plus players. After it happened the first time I made a point of purging my reserves regularly, but the game repopulates the roster with half star and one stars players.
Is there a maximum number of reserves?

Yes its under league settings.

And even if you have "no limit" set, reserve roster + active roster has an internal cap of 200 players as we cannot store more than that.

Hold on. I thought that cap applied only to a single roster, not both combined...
