Help me build a Brewers dynasty

I've played OOTP for a while but pretty casually: replaying World Series, random historical drafts, simming a season and jumping in to manage during the playoffs.

I want to start with the 1970 Brewers and try to build a good team, maybe a few years ahead of when they do well during the early 80s.

Using historic minor leagues. I see in 1970 Gorman Thomas is in my system. Yount and Molitor will be coming up in years to come...

Just looking for some general tips on how to build a good team:

- Free agents. Check every year I assume? When is the best time?
- Waiver wire. I read a tip I should check it every three days?
- Trades. Not really clear on how to make trades work. Check for weaknesses on my roster. Find positions maybe I have an overabundance of talent. I know I can shop certain players, mark untouchable, players, and put players on the trading block. Tips?
- Minors. Not super clear on when to bring players up though I know I can check reports...
- General tips?
