Favorite Gold+ players on a budget
I think I've filled my team with a lot of the good Silver and below players thanks to this thread.
On the higher end, are there any bargain oriented Gold+ players that people like? None of the Golds and Diamonds I've gotten (Bryce Harper, Machado, Severino, Scherzer and Snell) have performed that much better than my Silver players, and in many cases have performed worse. I know "bargain" is relative, but I'm thinking under 10K? Last edited by bsizzle; 01-31-2019 at 02:17 PM. |

Record Breaker Carlos Delgado (2003, I believe) has performed well in every season I've played him in except for one. He's not great defensively but he hits RHP very well and if you can platoon him with a half decent bat vs LHP you've got a great combo.
All Star Roy Oswalt (Astros, can't remember the year... although I doubt there is more than 1) has also performed extremely well for me as a starter. High movement rating helps with HR prevention. Both are gold and both definitely can be found for under 10k... maybe even under 4k.

Larry Dierker, Patrick Corbin, and Frank Tanana have been very good for me for multiple years. They are all gold pitchers who should be available for under 5k

If you can deal with a 1B with limited power, I like 85 gold Rod Carew a in platoon against RHP.

I just picked up an 83 rated Jay Bell for my F2P team. So far he is playing really well. Great defensive and a passable bat.

Garry Maddox has been a huge upgrade over Ichiro for me.
Also, Future Legend Robles has been very good since day 1. Check out his career stats: |

Buddy Bell (88 OVR, 5k-6k avg cost) has been a revelation for me at 3B. Great defense to go along with solid enough offensive production. Paul Blair (86 OVR) falls into this category, but at 7k-8k, is slightly more expensive at a position (CF) that seems to have better options that are balanced offensively and defensively than 3B.
I've also been surprised at how much production the balanced Moises Alou card (82 OVR) retains, even as the team faces harder competition. I only wish the defense was better... If you want a unique bullpen piece, check out Wilcy Moore. He is 88 OVR with a 3k avg cost, but what makes him so interesting is the 83 Movement paired with 41 Stamina. And beyond that, who wouldn't love to have a closer who pitched over 200 innings in the year upon which their card is modeled.

Clemente 89 and as mentioned Carew 82 are very nice cards.
edit: Clemente is averaging exactly 10k at the moment. Last edited by mcdog512; 01-31-2019 at 04:15 PM. |

I've gotten good production from the 84 OVR Clemente. Last time I looked that card was selling for under 4k in the AH. Other cards to look for that should sell for under 5k are the the 88 OVR Dizzy Dean and 89 OVR Whitey Ford cards.

Craig Stammen for reliever/closer/setup guy, most stable reliever i have in my team, steady guy. Posey for second catcher is good and reasonable price now at 2-2.5k pp. Realmuto for a cheaper option for catcher. Jose Vidro at 2b.

Cleon Jones (89) is a great RH bat with excellent defense in LF and 1B. He can be trained pretty high in RF also. He murders LHP and is about league average against RHP in Perfect Leagues. He was a 5 WAR player for me in Gold level and below (pulled him from my starter packs). |

It's amazing how differently separate cards of the exact same card can play so differently. The Moises Alou and Todd Helton cards listed above were not good for me in several seasons of silver. I got rid of the Alou and sold the 88 gold record breaker Helton for the 88 gold All Star Helton.

There's plenty of quality Gold cards below 10k. I've taken a team made up of 75% Gold (4 Diamonds and no Perfects) to a Diamond league world series (loss) and now into a Perfect league (a few games below .500). Yeah, I probably won't and don't want to be in that Perfect league for long.

I was inspired to pick up that card too when I saw how he did for your Burgers...IIRC we have the same park setup. Actually I "downgraded" from 88 Todd Helton, who had been underperforming for years (must have been the bad one of the two). Not regretting it so far.

Eddie Collins Sr. for me (because AS Keuchel is not a bargain). I platoon him against right handed pitching and he will almost always hit over .300 and steal 30 bases. Great lead off hitter for me.
