Can Some Cards Be Cursed?
I recently bought an AH 1985 Carlton Fisk (75 rating), and was surprised when I saw the stats he carried over from his previous owner(s).
I got him in 2023, and it seems like he's been riding the bench for four seasons of previous teams, but after accumulating an entire season's worth of ABs over his career, he's hitting .174. (614 ab in 166 GS). Not a very frisky Fisk. Anyone have the '85 Fisk? How's he hitting for you? I know it makes zero sense, but maybe the OOTP gods have simply vexxed this one particular Fisk, and left his parallel universe counterparts to do some reasonable slugging. The 30 HR per 162 are nice, but I can't help wonder if he has been dumped multiple times for under-performance, and if anyone else has had a similar issue with other players- acquiring an AH star with a bigtime dud history? On a positive note, the player he was meant to upgrade- 2017 Salvador Perez (69 rating), is hitting about .240 per year with a 162-game avg of 32 HR. Sometimes Bronze players are great bargains! I absolutely think some cards can just have bad luck.
I've had similiar experiences with some cards that I have on multiple teams |

Yep. But I think it is pretty cool that you can see the stats a player had from their old teams.

Due to confirmation bias almost every card is cursed.

I have incurred the displeasure of the great 97 Jackie for my disloyalty! Woe be to me as I must pay for my betrayal by competing under his curse of my entire team for all eternity!!!

I've honestly had this thought as well - maybe some cards are just randomly chosen to perform poorly. But honestly it's just small sample size or tough competition. Give it a year and see. Also, remember that the average player quality is much higher than the major leagues, especially at higher levels. When half the league has a perfect Mike trout playing center, your mlb all star fielder is actually kind of bad compared to the average.

I think this is an example of some ratings being cursed moreso than any cards. This Fisk may be a 75, but that is mostly on the strength of his power (which the OP even compliments) and his above average defense. The poor ratings related to batting average are producing a poor batting average.
Not all 75 Overall cards are created equal. |

I am now in my second season with my 100 Chris Sale card performing worse than every other Chris Sale card in my league.

For me it is J.D. Martinez. He got off to slow starts the first 4 seasons. Sometimes he recovers, other times not. This season is the first he has hit good early, so we'll see what happens.

I dunno. That sounds too logical. I'd rather blame witchcraft or voodoo.

I would've paid half the RP back on whoever bought the 92 Snell off me to see their reaction at his accumulative stats. ERA in the 6 or 7s every season, even on a 75 pitch count.

I have him on one of my teams for his defense, but in 3 seasons never batted over 200. Finally put him on the reserve roster and picked up a different catcher.

I got a fresh Snell right outta the pack. ERA topped 5.00, then 6.00, closing in on 7.00. I think he pitches with the Monkey's Paw.

My most consistent pitchers have been a Silver Sixto Sanchez and Diamond Gerritt Cole who each season usually have a decent ERA and a high number of quality starts. The rest, I've learned to not expect production from them. Must be 1 million times more frustrating being a GM of a ML franchise and having spent over $100 million in real money on a pitcher and he underperforms woefully against his peers. |
