any way to defer game updates?
Is there any way to defer the game being updated? It seems to take about 20 minutes to update everything each time a new version is released. It would be nice to be able to apply the updates after I was done with the game instead of having to wait around for the game updates to finish (which all appear to be focused on Perfect Team which I am not even interested in anyway). Any suggestions for how to control the game updates a little better?

Looks like another update got installed overnight - waiting again :-(
This is the third time in the last several days and I don't see others complaining, so I wonder if I am not set up properly? Are there any options/settings I can check? |

Yeah I know what you mean. One of my favorite things to do is watch a few games each morning before I head to the work. Yesterday I clicked to start the game and realized at that time there was an update queued. 15 minutes later the game was still processing the update. I was out of time and had to go to work. Ugh!
I am playing Perfect Team, but simply as a time killer. Not really that into it. I do hope at some time they offer the ability to create energy drinks or breakfast bars you can feed your players to give them super powers. Oh and the ability to trade a chicken to another player for a cow would be cool. |

This is getting absolutely ridiculous and they have botched this impossibly badly. Sorry but its the truth.

You must not have had the most recent version (122) installed. |

Assuming you are on Steam, this is arguably more a failure on their part, for having removed the ability to disable updates for any given game (I'm not sure if Origin does this as well). One option might be to set the update option to only update when you launch the game, then to make sure you are in offline mode when you launch it. I don't know if this will cause any issues with logging in for Challenge Mode.

I assume you are using the Steam version. I don't have OOTP on Steam. I don't like Steam but that's another matter. Steam used to allow you to turn off updates but not anymore. Maybe this article will provide a solution. Restricting the time for updates may the best solution (solution 2). I will try solution 4 myself.

Thanks for the responses. Yes, I am on Steam.
I guess the problem is that since the game is running on a laptop that is typically shut off when not in use, and since the laptop is shared by several family members, the downloads are never happening automatically in the background for me, so they are ready in advance - which seems to be the point of having Steam manage the downloads. I infer that there is an option to not have OOTP running through Steam. Is that something I can "fix" now, or am I stuck with Steam since that is how the game was purchased? |

I got a copy of that as well for $9.99 last week, but haven't installed it as I am not 100% sure that both versions can co-exist at the same time. |

when both were first installed, they were in different folders, so that issue didn't happen.

You can still turn off auto updates in Steam you just have to do it from Big Picture mode for some reason.

steam(ing pile of excrement) is awesome!
never update immediately with any game that has a procedure somilar to OotP. basicalyl any kickstarter game, any indie game/smaller developer, and even a lot of the larger ones with immenslely more resources that it isn't neccessary, but it's cheaper. Even if they don't do it this way, you should wait on updates... e.g. with windows i only do security updates immediately, and wait on others. i'll google the kbxxxxx and read their 'info' pages on the patches before installing. (avoid nag-ware bs and other MS nonsense). for companies like OotP it improves viability and therefore more variety of games on the market are possible. it's nothing but a good thing, but it is frustrating, nonetheless. users are used as debuggers, simple as that. if you don't like it like me, wait at least a week before updating. i even browse over recent thread topics to see if any hint at something broken with new patch released during that time -- nothing but a glance; no time invested. "steam" isn't an excuse. as humans we can think ahead more than 'next week' to avoid such a problem. there are other options and methods for purchasing. this falls under "buyer beware"... certainly isn't the company's fault.... (and i am not a cheerleader for any industry... the exact opposite, but common sense applies and some reasonable responsibility falls on the user when purchasing something.) sounds like you can stop updates on steam, anyway. this is nothing new for ootp or numerous other software developers. it's a very common and accepted practice in the industry. you could say it is prevalent. someone's hangry?
