Retire #42

This suggestion involves 2 suggestions.

1. As we all know Jackie Robinson's number is retired across all of Major League Baseball. In OOTP, in the current Major League Database it is also retired across the Major Leagues; however, the #42 is not retired across all the affiliated Minor Leagues. Jackie Robinson's number has been retired in all the Minor Leagues as well as Major League Baseball, and I would like for this the be the case in OOTP as well.

2. Kind of plays off the same thing as above. It would be nice if we could have a way to retire a number across the entire league, rather than having to go in and retire the number for each team.

No number should be retired sport-wide, no matter what sport or number we're talking about here, I think. Doesn't matter if it's Gretzky, Robinson, or whoever, I don't think it should be the case, either in reality or in simulated universes or whatever.

And I think only teams should be able to decide if and when and which numbers should be retired for them, and under what circumstances, not whole leagues or commissioners or whoever. If someone wants to have Jackie's number retired for their team, that should only be the case for the teams that Jackie played for in his entire professional baseball career, in my opinion. But to force all other teams he was never associated with to retire that number is illogical and needless, in my view.

Granted, Jackie did a lot of good things in his life, for sure, and made a huge societal impact on the world, both in terms of his athletic career and in the non-sports world, and I am not denying that. But it was still not necessary to retire his number sport-wide, just as it wasn't necessary for the NHL to retire Gretzky's number 99 either, in my view.

If this were to be implemented, I would just unretire #42 for all non-associated teams, as I have done before, but this idea should not be forced on any player of OOTP, nor should the non-use of #99 for the FHM players, either, I think. That is all for now, at least, then, folks. CD out.

P.S. In the case of Sutter for the Cardinals, for example, though, after a certain point, I might allow #42 to be retired for the Cardinals, as it was done in reality after his election to the Hall of Fame. Or allow it to be retired for other teams' players who also wore #42 for those teams, of course. That is all for now, I think. CD out.

Regardless of how we think the number retirement should have been handled, the fact is that that's what happened, and I don't think it's an unreasonable request for the minors in the game to reflect real life.

As for point 2, I too would like to be able to retire a number league-wide, I just don't know if I would run across that situation often enough to warrant it.

I play historical so do not retire it prior to 1997, if at all.

Regarding point #2, for those that do not like that a number is retired league wide, if the option to retire a number league wide was added you would think that you would also be able to delete the retired number league wide.

i like the idea. i can see some modern era players wanting to see this added; for accuracy's sake... or maybe they like Jackie Robinson. But also, as a fictional player, i'd the like the option to use that story line, where a popular player gets honored.

Perhaps, it can be added as an option on the Game Settings page. Or on the Commissioner's page... and those that don't want it wouldn't ever have to worry about it.

I think this is a solution in search of a problem. It would take less than 10 minutes in commissioner mode to retire a number across all the teams in you ML going team by team.

That is why I would like to see an option for the league. With an option to retire the number across the league I could do it in less than 30 seconds in a ML. Not to mention when you have 2 AAA leagues, 3 AA, 3 A+, 2 A-, 2 short season A, and 4 rookie leagues it gets rather tedious.

At least you do not have to include the Dominican Summer League, because I do not believe they have retired #42 across the league.
