Historical Sim Player Pool Issues

I tried starting a historical sim where players from all eras would be eligible for the draft. This was going great the first few years but then I simmed up to the late 50s and looked at it year by year until I was about to jump in in 1961 and I noticed every year the draft would have maybe 1-5 eligible players only and they were all 1* at best.

After a couple years I thought maybe the game just didn't generate many that year and it was tough luck but after 3-4 consecutive years I looked into it more and I'm not sure what I did wrong. It seems to me every player who is in the DB has already been added aside from a few stranglers? I looked at all the players in the major and minor leagues and the youngest player who is more than a 1* player is a 28-year-old C.C. Sabathia... between the full minor leagues and majors there were only 12 players 25 and under... Then I decided to just start searching for any player that popped into my head and went through the entire 2018 Twins team and then countless other players old and new and sure enough, every single one of them was either currently active or retired.

I have both "Players from all eras eligible to enter league" and "Game automatically adds historical players" (sorry if I got the settings wrong, at work and can't remember exactly what they are called). I also have the amateur draft enabled so players aren't assigned to their original teams but instead added to the draft pool - or at least that's what I thought would happen and what it looked like happened early on.

I then started a new league with the exact same settings starting in 1871 but didn't check the "Game automatically adds historical players" because I thought maybe the issue was the game was adding players in the correct years, but also adding players from all eras - essentially doubling up - which ended up with everyone from the database being added within the first 30-50 years or so... but after the inaugural draft which went smoothly, when I simmed to the first year player draft, there were 0 eligible players. I simmed another year just to confirm this wasn't a one year glitch and it wasn't, the first year player draft in year two had 0 eligible players as well...

What am I doing wrong? Is it possible to start a league in 1871 with players from all eras and then the first year player draft has players from all eras also but the amount of players doesn't run out by the 50s or so?

I just want to have players from every eras and take over the Twins in 1961 with whatever roster they have in hopes of drafting Babe Ruth or something in the 60s!!

Thanks for the help

Maybe you could post a picture of your settings to see if some boxes are checked/unchecked that shouldn't be. I play a lot of random debut leagues and have never had that sort of issue.

Go to game settings>league settings>historical. If I had to guess (and that's what I'm doing) there would be something somewhere in those settings that would be the problem.

How big is your draft each season? If you're running out of players, that's the first thing I would check. Remember, after the inaugural draft OOTP imports players the year they made their MLB debuts. Therefore, the players are MLB ready. Some more than others, but it's not like playing fictional where guys need time to season in the minors. Having a huge draft is only going to cause a logjam of talent. I usually have import enough players to fill a draft lasting 4-6 rounds. I use reserve rosters instead of minors. If you use minors, you could easily get by with one or two levels and use a 8-10 round draft.

Thanks for the help guys. I'll try get my screenshot posted this evening...

I have a feeling what David Watts said is correct. I don't remember setting a limit for a draft rounds so it is probably set to whatever default is (40?) and running full minor leagues probably isn't helping.

Is there any database out there that has players enter the league at the age they were actually drafted, thus not being MLB ready? That and/or with enough players that I could use full minor leagues? I thought I read somewhere about a Spritze database but not sure where or when I read that.

Just a quick update for you two who helped...

I started over again but this time I made sure the draft was limited to 10 rounds (with creating players for only 10) and I only have AAA and AA for minor leagues.

I simmed from 1871 to 1959 right now and everything looks good. Draft class still has plenty of players. Plenty of young guys in the big leagues. I didn't have too much time to search for players to see if there are still a lot of guys yet to enter but I hope to do so tonight.

Thanks for the help! Would be awesome to have a DB where it is possible to run full minor leagues while doing historical like this but I can't even imagine how much work that would be for the developers. I think I'll be content playing like this and in the future I will just allow fictional players to enter the league and at that point maybe have full minor leagues.

Thanks again!
