Roster rules question
During the 2018 season, I sent SP Miles Mikolas to the minors after he cleared waivers. He has a little over one year of MLB service time so he can't refuse the assignment. Currently, he is not on the secondary roster. He is out of options. He has a guaranteed contract for next season ($7.7M).
Do I have to add him to the 40-man roster after the season ends or can I expose him to the Rule 5 draft? Do I have to add him to the 40-man roster before Opening Day 2019 or can I just let him rot err... pitch in the minors? |

I am prone to missing something obvious, but I see no reason why he should be on the 40-man roster after he has been successfully removed from it.

Pretty sure you can leave him there, although you’re still on the hook for the 7.7m.

Oh yeah, I know I have to eat the money. I just don't want to waste a 40-man roster spot on him, but I wouldn't mind having him around as a ninth starter on the depth chart. When you acquire a player with a major league contract, the game tells you that he has to be placed on the secondary roster. But I think Westheim is right that he is not required to be there after you have successfully removed him. |

Yeah, that's correct. For a real life example see Jonathan Singleton. The Astros had to pay him through this year but he hadn't actually been on their 40-man roster for a few years now.

Yeah the challenge is, if you ever actually use him as a starter again, you will have to add him back to the 40 and start this problem all over. ![]() Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

And in official MLB rules, if a player is DFA-ed a second time to remove them from the 40-man roster, they can elect to become free agents, so you'd lose them from your farm. Unfortunately in the game, we don't have that rule in.

Rusney Castillo on the Red Sox, too. Doesn't count towards the luxury tax number either.

Starting in 2012, any player who in the previous season qualified as a 'Super Two' player can also elect free agency instead of accepting an outright assignment to the minors. However, this type of player cannot elect free agency after the conclusion of the regular season if the outright was accepted. Actually, that changed in the recent CBA. Previously, only the salary earned while on the major league roster counted toward the luxury tax, and the salary earned after the outright assignment occurred didn't count. Starting in 2017, all of the salary of an outrighted player counts toward the luxury tax, regardless if it was earned while in the majors or minors. And they have to be paid if the contract is guaranteed. I’d love to see that in OOTP.
