my mega-world on v. 16 takes forever to back up so I've only done it once per year... when I'm simming. I finished playing out my second season and started to do offseason stuff like HoF voting and suddenly... it would hang on the loading screen

Normally I wait until year-end when the almanac is generated and then back up; I got lazy and would have ended up losing a whole season (in which I lost the US championship but won the world championship for the first time!). On a whim I decided to try to import it into v. 17 (I had been waiting to convert to current version until the season ended). AND IT WORKED!

So, I'm pretty sure someone here once suggested this and I somehow remembered but.. if you lose a save you may be able to salvage it with an import! Also force yourself to back up more frequently

yes, indeedy! Ye cannot back-up too often.
i lost 50 yrs once. not that i didn't back-up, but i couldn't figure out how to restore! (yes, i had my dunce cap on too tightly!) Once i figured it out, needless to say, i backup after every session. And i "save game" within playing (simming really) after every few game days or so. Since i started this over-kill, i've never lost more than a month of play, and that was when i didn't follow my own rules and made a major "oooppps" and didn't catch it right away.
Back-ups are a wonderful thing to be certain.

PS - what part of the "California Republic" are you from? i grew up in the Monterey Bay area, but haven't been back since '72, except for funerals ....

I set autosave for every week... the game is so much more stable these days it seems to work well, it's probably been a year or more since I lost multiple games in a save. I try to save whenever I make a good trade or substantial edits to the world.

I'm in SF, I haven't been down to Monterey in eons unfortunately. I go down for a San Jose Giants game every month or so though
