Voiding contracts but taking less
In my METS dynasty Cespedes voided the last year of contract (due 18 mil). Wanted to be a free agent. But then signed with me for 2 years 13250000 per year. So voided his contract and took less but gained another year. He is now 37 and his ratings are 2.5/2.5 stars but he did hit 39 homers last year. Weird that he voided his contract though.

Did he sign with you before or after free agency started?
Players/agents often miscalculate how much they will get on the open market. |

26.5M > 18M
it's debateable in this 1 context, but it's probably a fringe case, too. it would make more sense for a player that voids his contract to wait for FA bidding competition. it must not 'check' that and moves on without thinking "why" the player is in that situation and simply looks at what you offer and other normal factors and it returns a 'yes' to the offer. it doesn't remember that it voided the contract... it just know's it's at the end of last year on current contract (after void) and it runs through the normal logic. most of that can be explained by what rain king said as far as why it should occur in some proportion even if it isn't smart in hindsight. risk invovled when choosing FA or re-signing etc. as long as it's not in a drastically different proportion from real life, it's reasonable for it to occur -- maybe how it occurs can be less random and more based on RL reasons eventually. Oh yea, I missed that the new contract was per year. Yea, I can see taking a paycut per year to get a guaranteed 2nd year...especially for an aging vet.

On a similar note, I'm at the end of the 2023 season of an MLB quick start where I am running the Red Sox. I wanted to re-sign Mookie Betts even though he is 31 and unlikely to be that productive for more than a couple more years. I offered up to a 5 year deal worth 25M per year with incentives. I was willing to way overpay for him mainly for the sentimental value. He declined. He ended up signing a 6 year deal for 10.7M per year in December with another team. Now I know players can be wrong about how much they think they will get in free agency and end up signing for less than they were offered by their original team but I don't think I've ever seen a player be this wrong before. This is so off that it almost seems like a bug.

Here's another example. This player just declined his player option for another season at 13 million. He'll be lucky to get offered more than 5 million in free agency. I just don't get the logic here although it does remove a contract from my books that I'm glad I don't have to carry.
