Life in the Atlantic League - Story of the Long Island Ducks
  The Atlantic League of Professional Baseball (ALPB) is a professional, independent baseball league located primarily in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern United States, especially the greater metropolitan areas of the Northeast megalopolis, with one team located in Texas. League offices are located in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
The Atlantic League operates in cities not served by Major or Minor League Baseball teams and is not affiliated with either; most of its teams are within suburbs and exurbs too close to other teams in the organized baseball system to have minor league franchises of their own. The Atlantic League requires cities to have the market for a 4,000 to 7,500-seat ballpark and for the facility to be maintained at or above AAA standards. When Atlantic League professionals are signed by MLB clubs, they usually start in their Double-A or Triple-A affiliates. History In 1998, the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball played its inaugural season, with teams in Bridgewater, Newark, and Atlantic City, New Jersey; Nashua, New Hampshire; Newburgh, New York; and Bridgeport, Connecticut. The creation of the league was the result of the New York Mets' objection to Frank Boulton's proposal to move the former Albany-Colonie Yankees because of its territorial rights to the region. Boulton, a Long Island native, decided to create a new league that would have a higher salary cap for its players and a longer season than most of the other independent baseball organizations. He modeled the Atlantic League after the older Pacific Coast League, with facilities that exceed AAA-level standards. Boulton also emphasized signing players of Major League Baseball experience for all Atlantic League teams, raising the level of play above other independent leagues. In 2010, the league announced that it would be expanding to Sugar Land, Texas and adding its first franchise not located in an Atlantic coast state. The Sugar Land Skeeters began play in 2012. In 2010, amid financial struggles, the Newark Bears moved from the Atlantic League to the Can-Am League, leaving the Bridgeport Bluefish and Somerset Patriots as the only teams remaining from the league's inaugural season. In the summer of 2013, then-ALPB President Frank Boulton announced that he would be resigning so that he could devote more time to operating the Long Island Ducks. He was replaced by longtime high-ranking Major League Baseball executive Rick White. On July 8, 2015, the Atlantic League began using Rawlings baseballs with red and blue seams, virtually unused in the sport since the American League swapped the blue in their seams for red in 1934. On September 1, 2015, the Atlantic League announced conditional approval for an expansion team or a relocated team to play in New Britain, Connecticut for the 2016 season. On October 21, 2015, the Camden Riversharks announced they would cease operations immediately due to the inability to reach an agreement on lease terms with the owner of Campbell's Field, the Camden County Improvement Authority. The team was replaced by the New Britain Bees for the 2016 season. On May 29, 2016, Jennie Finch was the guest manager for the league's Bridgeport Bluefish, thus becoming the first woman to manage a professional baseball team. Shortly before the conclusion of the 2017 season, the city of Bridgeport, Connecticut voted to not continue with professional baseball in the city and announced plans to convert The Ballpark at Harbor Yard into a music amphitheater; the Bridgeport Bluefish announced plans to relocate to High Point, North Carolina in 2019 when the construction of a new multipurpose facility in High Point is completed. League officials announced the return of the Pennsylvania Road Warriors, an all road game team, to keep the league at an even eight teams while the Bluefish go inactive for the 2018 season. The Atlantic League is generally regarded as the most successful and highest level of baseball among independent leagues.Two former Atlantic League players have been inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame: Tim Raines and Rickey Henderson. Other notable former and future Major League ballplayers who have played in the league include Roger Clemens, Scott Kazmir, Dontrelle Willis, Juan González, John Rocker and José Canseco, and several others have coached or managed, including Gary Carter, Tommy John, Bud Harrelson, Gary Gaetti and Sparky Lyle. The Atlantic League has consistently posted higher per game and per season attendance numbers than other independent circuits including the American Association, Can-Am League, and Frontier League. In 2015, the Atlantic League experienced a watershed moment for independent baseball when it signed a formal agreement with Major League Baseball which put into writing the rules which the ALPB would follow in selling its players' contracts to MLB clubs and their affiliates. This marked the first time that MLB, which has enjoyed a U.S. Supreme Court-granted antitrust exemption since 1922, had made any formal agreement with or acknowledgment of an independent baseball league.  History
Residents of Long Island anticipated the arrival of professional baseball for many years, until the Ducks' inaugural 2000 season. The New York Mets and the New York Yankees own the territorial rights to keep an affiliated team, Major or Minor League, from moving within a certain distance of their respective ballparks. Baseball fans on Long Island enthusiastically support the Ducks, and the team has led the Atlantic League in attendance in 12 of their 14 seasons. In 2007, team owner Frank Boulton expressed his contentment with the Ducks to Baseball America saying, "The Long Island Ducks are the best thing I've ever done in baseball." Along with their success at the gate, the Ducks celebrated their first Atlantic League championship in 2004 when they defeated the Camden Riversharks in a three-game sweep to capture the Atlantic League Championship Series. Outfielder Justin Davies was named Championship Series Most Valuable Player. That summer, shortstop Kevin Baez was named the MVP of the Atlantic League All-Star Game, which was also held at Camden's Campbell's Field. On Monday, November 10, 2009, the Ducks announced that former Major Leaguer and Hall-of-Famer Gary Carter would be the new manager for the 2009 season. That year, he led the Ducks to a 74-66 record along with the Second Half Liberty Division championship. It would be the sixth consecutive season that the Ducks reached the postseason. After Carter's passing in 2012, the Ducks honored his memory by dedicating the season to their former skipper and wearing a commemorative #8 patch on their uniforms all season long. Former MLB All-stars Dontrelle Willis and Ramon Castro signed with the Ducks in 2013. Among the other former Major Leaguers on Long Island's roster in 2013 were Ben Broussard, Leo Rosales, Josh Barfield, Bill Hall, Bryant Nelson, Ian Snell and Lew Ford. Rich Hill played with the Ducks for part of the 2015 season before returning to the majors. Éric Gagné attempted a comeback with the Ducks in 2017. First baseman Nate Freiman, pitcher Henderson Alvarez, outfielder Quintin Berry, and pitcher Tim Melville were four Ducks player during the 2017 season who had their contracts purchased by an MLB organization or foreign professional league. Meet the Front Office
 Owner(s) - Frank Boulton, Bud Harrelson & Seth Waugh: So the Ducks have three owners....oh joy...now I have three people to deal with if things are not going well. Good news is that this season, Mr Boulton is going to be running the Road Warriors as the league awaits the entry of the new team in High Point, North Carolina beginning next season. He also is the founder of the league and the current CEO, so I think he has very little to do with the day to day operations of the team. Mr Harrelson, or Bud as he insists I call him is also our acting Bench and First Base Coach, so he is going to be working with Kevin (Baez) and the other coaches on the field. He played in the bigs from 1965 til 1980 with the Mets, Phillies and Rangers and holds a career batting average of .236 and played a big role on the 1969 Amazin' Mets run to the World Series and got into a fight with Pete Rose in a game in 1973. I don't know how much longer we will have him around as he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's a couple years ago, but at 73 he still gets around and his baseball mind is as sharp as ever. But the guy I am going to deal with on a daily basis is Mr Waugh. He's the former CEO of Deutsche Bank so he knows a thing or two about making a profit, and from what I can tell he's not too quick to open the checkbook. We have a set budget of $650,000 and we are currently about $170,000 under the league salary cap of $375,000 and I am pretty confident we have a solid roster going into the 2018 season. Here are the goals he has set for me as of Opening Day: 1) Achieve a winning record in 2018 2) Reach the playoffs by 2023 I don't think we will have an issue with either of them seeing as we were just in the Atlantic League Championship Series last season. Manager - Kevin Baez: Born on January 10th, 1967, Baez was drafted in the 7th round of the 1988 MLB Amateur draft by the New York Mets. He never lived up to his potential, appearing in only 63 games in the Majors, posting a .179 career batting average with 7 RBI and 10 runs scored. He is probably best known for being dealt by the Mets in 1994 to the Orioles for David Segui. He played for the Ducks from 2002 til 2005, when he retired and began his coaching career with the Mets in the minor leagues in 2007 before returning to Long Island, where he as named manager following the 2010 season. He has a record of 429-391 and has two championships (2012 & 2013) and has only missed the playoffs once in his career. Pitching Coach - John Brownell:One thing you never get used to in the Indy Leagues is that some of the coaching staff are still playing for your team. The 34 yeard old Brownell has been with the Ducks since 2012, but he was drafted in 2002 by the Colorado Rockies in the 47th round, but decided to go to Oklahoma. He was drafted again in 2006 by the Phillies in the 27th round and played just one season at Short-Season A ball, going 1-3 with a 3.89 ERA in 19 games (1 start). He bounced around in different Indy Leagues before being acquired by the Ducks in a trade with the Grand Prairie AirHogs of the American Association and has been a staple in the Ducks starting rotation and took over as pitching coach in 2015. Hitting Coach - Lew Ford: Just like Brownell, the 41 year old Ford is still playing in the Ducks outfield. He spent 2003 til 2007 with the Minnesota Twins before heading to Japan for the 2008 season. He returned to the states in 2009, where he joined the Ducks for the first time before a short stint with the Baltimore Orioles in 2012 and 2013. Ford has played 551 games for Long Island and has a career .328 batting average in 2115 at bats. He was also named the hitting coach in 2015. |

Meet the Ducks - Pitchers
Starting Pitchers
LHP - Andrew Barbosa: 2017 Stats - 7-3, 5.29 ERA, 27 BB, 65 SO, 36/4 (G/GS) w/ AAA - Colorado Springs - 6'7" 230lbs, 30 yrs old Barbosa begins his second season with the Ducks and seventh in professional baseball. The starter joined the Ducks in May of 2015 and made nine starts. He compiled a 4-1 record with a 2.82 ERA and 59 strikeouts to just 19 walks in 51 innings of work. The southpaw allowed just two runs (one earned) over his first four starts with Long Island, spanning a total of 22 innings, and posted back-to-back games with 10 strikeouts on May 30 at Somerset and June 5 at Camden. For his efforts, his contract was purchased by the Atlanta Braves organization on July 9. The Puerto Rico native went on to go 5-2 with a 2.68 ERA and 51 strikeouts in 16 games (five starts) at Double-A Mississippi to end the year. The 30-year-old pitched at the Triple-A level for the first time in his career over the following two seasons. He split time at four different levels with the New York Mets organization in 2016, combining to go 3-0 with a sparkling 1.51 ERA and 71 strikeouts to 19 walks in 16 games (15 starts). He then made 36 appearances (four starts) with Colorado Springs (AAA, Brewers) in 2017, accruing a 7-3 record, one save and 65 strikeouts in 66 and one-third innings. Prior to his time with the Ducks, the University of South Florida alum spent parts of four seasons in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization. Barbosa was drafted by the Diamondbacks in the 36th round of the 2012 amateur draft. How Acquired: Signed with the Ducks on February 8th, 2018 as a free agent RHP - John Brownell: 2017 Stats - 10-5, 3.44 ERA, 51 BB, 96 SO, 24/24 (G/GS) w/ Long Island - 6'3" 215lbs, 34 yrs old Brownell enters the season as the Ducks all-time leader in wins (56), strikeouts (667), innings pitched (875.2) and games started (133). In six seasons with Long Island, he has amassed a record of 56-40 with a 3.59 ERA, 23 complete games and five shutouts. The 34-year-old also holds franchise single-season records in strikeouts (147; 2016), innings (202.0; 2014), starts (29; 2014) and complete games (7; 2013). The Omaha resident led the Ducks to back-to-back Atlantic League championships in 2012 and 2013, earning Championship Series MVP honors in the latter after winning a pair of starts over the Somerset Patriots. The 12-year pro has started 11 postseason games with the Flock, compiling a 5-3 record with a 3.68 ERA and 44 strikeouts over 71 innings of work. In 2015, he became the second player in team history to be named Atlantic League Pitcher of the Year (Mike Loree; 2011) after leading the league in wins (12), innings pitched (175.2), complete games (4), shutouts (2) and strikeouts (146). The University of Oklahoma alum garnered his first Atlantic League All-Star Game selection in 2017. He posted a 10-5 record during the regular season with a 3.44 ERA, one complete game and 96 strikeouts over 24 starts. The righty’s ERA was third-best among Atlantic League qualifiers, while his 10 victories ranked fifth in the league. He also made two postseason starts, as the Ducks defeated Somerset to earn their second consecutive Liberty Division championship. How Acquired: Re-signed with the Ducks following the 2017 season and will serve as the teams Pitching Coach for the 4th season. LHP - Jake Fisher: 2017 Stats - 10-7, 2.80 ERA, 32 BB, 126 SO, 22/22 (G/GS) w/ Windy City (Frontier League) & Long Island - 5'10" 180lbs, 27 yrs old Fisher will begin his second season with the Ducks and sixth in professional baseball. The starter was acquired by the Ducks from the Windy City Thunderbolts of the Frontier League last September. He made a pair of regular season starts for Long Island, combining to allow just four runs in 13 innings of work (2.77 ERA). The Oklahoma native then started two playoff games and posted a 1-1 record with a 3.30 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 16 and one-third innings. Included was a complete game victory over the Somerset Patriots in Game Three of the Liberty Division Championship Series. The southpaw struck out nine batters over nine innings, allowing just one run, to give the Ducks a 2-1 series lead en route to claiming the team’s second consecutive division title and fifth in the past seven years. Prior to joining the Flock, the 27-year-old turned in a tremendous season for Windy City. He led the Frontier League in innings pitched (138.0) and was tied for the league lead with 120 strikeouts, four complete games and 20 games started. In addition, he was tied for second in the league in wins (10) and ranked third in ERA (2.80). The University of Oklahoma alum spent the previous three seasons (2014-16) with Windy City after beginning his career with the Ogden Raptors (Rk, Dodgers). Fisher was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 22nd round of the 2013 amateur draft. How Acquired: September 8th, 2017 in a trade with the Windy City Thunderbolts for a player to be named later. He resigned with the Ducks on 2/27/18. LHP - Wander Perez: 2017 Stats - 1-2, 3.57 ERA, 16 BB, 33 SO, 27/2 (G/GS) w/ Bridgeport (Atlantic League) & Cleburne (American Association) 6'3" 195lbs, 33 yrs old Perez comes to Long Island with nine seasons of professional experience, including stints in the Chicago White Sox and Philadelphia Phillies organizations. He began 2017 at the Triple-A level with the Phillies, appearing in six games with Lehigh Valley. The Dominican Republic native spent the first four seasons of his career in the White Sox system, appearing 129 games (three starts) and reaching as high as Advanced-A. The 33-year-old pitched in the Atlantic League with the Bridgeport Bluefish in parts of two years (2015, 2017). In six games during the 2015 campaign, he twirled five and two-thirds scoreless innings, yielding just three hits and two walks. This past season, the southpaw turned in a miniscule 1.71 ERA over 21 innings, allowing just 14 hits and five walks while striking out 25. Perez was originally signed by the White Sox as an undrafted free agent in 2006. How Acquired: Selected in the 3rd Round of the Bridgeport Bluefish Dispersal Draft on November 1st, 2017. RHP - Carlos Pimentel: 2017 Stats - 7-4, 4.68 ERA, 26 BB, 88 SO, 14/14 (G/GS) w/ Lincoln Saltdogs (American Assocation) 6'3" 215lbs, 28 yrs old Pimentel spent the majority of 2017 with the Lincoln Saltdogs of the American Association. In 14 starts, he compiled a 7-4 record, one complete game shutout and 88 strikeouts to just 26 walks over 84 and two-thirds innings of work. The 28-year-old was unbeaten in his first seven starts of the season, earning victories in five, and pitched six or more innings in nine of his outings. He also made three starts with Saraperos de Saltillo in the Mexican League. The Dominican Republic native turned in a career year with the Iowa Cubs (AAA, Cubs) in 2015. He totaled a 12-6 record with a splendid 2.95 ERA, two complete games and 118 strikeouts over 27 appearances (26 starts). For his efforts, he was named Pacific Coast League’s Pitcher of the Year and was selected as a Mid-Season and Post-Season All-Star. The righty was also a Mid-Season All-Star selection in 2013 with the Frisco RoughRiders (AA, Rangers), going 8-7 with a 4.09 ERA and 122 strikeouts in 22 games (21 starts) that year. Pimentel was originally signed as an amateur free agent by the Texas Rangers in 2007. How Acquired: Signed with the Ducks on April 11th, 2018 as a free agent Relief Pitchers RHP - Jake Dunning: 2017 Stats - 2-3, 3.65 ERA, 14 BB, 43 SO, 14/7 (G/GS) w/ Long Island - 6'4" 220lbs, 29 yrs old Dunning enters his second year with the Flock and 10th in professional baseball. The right-hander returns to Long Island after making 14 appearances (seven starts) in 2017. He compiled a 2-3 record with a 3.65 ERA and 43 strikeouts to just 14 walks over 49 and one-third innings. In his first seven appearances, all of which came out of the bullpen, he surrendered just two runs over 10 and two-thirds innings while striking out eight. The 29-year-old went on to start Game Four of the Liberty Division Championship Series, limiting Somerset to just one unearned in five and two-thirds innings, as the Ducks clinched their second consecutive division title. The Georgia native has two seasons of Major League experience with the San Francisco Giants. He made 30 appearances between 2013 and 2014, accruing a 2.77 ERA and 16 strikeouts over 26 innings. The Indiana University-Bloomington alum allowed a run in just one of his first 13 MLB appearances, yielding two runs total over 13 and one-third inning during that span. He spent the first eight seasons of his career in the Giants system before joining the Chicago White Sox organization to begin 2017. Dunning was originally drafted by the Giants in the 33rd round of the 2009 amateur draft. How Acquired: Resigned with the Ducks on April 9th, 2017 RHP - Jair Jurrjens: 2017 Stats - 4-3, 4.64 ERA, 18 BB, 44 SO, 11/10 (G/GS) w/ Oklahoma City Dodgers (Triple-A) 6'1" 200lbs, 32 yrs old Jurrjens begins his first season with the Ducks and 16th in professional baseball. He spent eight seasons at the Major League level, including five with the Atlanta Braves (2008-12) and one each with the Detroit Tigers (2007), Baltimore Orioles (2013) and Colorado Rockies (2014). In 130 games (128 starts), he compiled a 53-38 record, a 3.72 ERA, two complete games and 514 strikeouts over 767 and one-third innings. The Curacao native finished third in National League Rookie of the Year voting during the 2008 season behind Geovany Soto (Cubs) and Joey Votto (Reds). The following season, he led the National League in games started (34) while ranking third in ERA (2.60) and ninth in innings pitched (215.0). The righty was selected to the National League All-Star Team in 2011 and tossed one and two-thirds scoreless innings of relief in the NL’s 5-1 victory at Chase Field in Phoenix. That season, he totaled a 13-6 record, a 2.96 ERA, 90 strikeouts and 152 innings of work over 23 starts. Additional honors Jurrjens has garnered include being named to the Baseball America Major League All-Rookie Team in 2008, a pair of National League Pitcher of the Month selections (September, 2009 and May, 2011) and consecutive Mid-Season All-Star selections in 2005 with West Michigan (A, Tigers) and 2006 with Lakeland (A+, Tigers). The 32-year-old began 2017 by representing Team Netherlands at the World Baseball Classic. In three games (two starts), he posted a 1-0 record with a 2.38 ERA, helping lead the nation to a semifinal appearance. He then made 11 appearances (10 starts) with Oklahoma City (AAA, Dodgers) during the 2017 season, going 4-3 with a 4.64 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 54 and one-third innings. Jurrjens was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Tigers in 2003. How Acquired: Signed with the Ducks as a free agent on March 27th, 2018. RHP - Francisco Rodriguez: 2017 Stats - 2-5, 7 SV, 7.82 ERA, 11 BB, 23 SO w/ Detroit Tigers (MLB) 6'0" 195lbs, 36 yrs old Rodriguez has enjoyed a 16-year Major League career that includes stints with the Los Angeles Angels (2002-08), New York Mets (2009-11), Milwaukee Brewers (2011-13, 2014-15), Baltimore Orioles (2013) and Detroit Tigers (2016-17). He was selected to play in six Major League All-Star Games, representing the American League three times (2004, ‘07, ‘08) and the National League three times (2009, ‘14, ‘15). The Venezuela native earned a World Series championship with the Angels in 2002, finished in the Top 5 for Cy Young Award voting three times (2004, ‘06, ‘08) and ranked sixth in American League MVP voting for 2008. The 36-year-old has appeared in 948 games during his MLB career. His 437 saves rank fourth all-time, trailing only Mariano Rivera (652), Trevor Hoffman (601) and Lee Smith (478). He has also compiled a 2.86 career earned run average and 1,142 strikeouts to just 389 walks over 976 innings of work. Rodriguez led the American League in saves on three separate occasions (2005, ‘06, ‘08), and his 62 saves in 2008 are the most ever recorded in a single-season in Major League Baseball history. He has also pitched in 26 postseason games in the big leagues, totaling a 5-4 record, a 2.95 ERA, three saves and 49 strikeouts in 36 and two-thirds innings. The right-hander joins the Ducks after spending the 2017 season in the Tigers and Washington Nationals organizations. He pitched in 28 MLB games with Detroit, recording seven saves and striking out 23 batters in 25 and one-third innings. He then signed a minor league contract with an invite to spring training by the Philadelphia Phillies this past January. Rodriguez, a two-time World Baseball Classic participant with Venezuela (2006, ‘09), was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Angels in 1998. LHP - Daniel Schlereth: 2017 Stats - 2-3, 5 SV, 2.40 ERA, 18 BB, 39 SO, 37 G w/ Jupiter (A+), Jacksonville (AA) & New Orleans (AAA) 6'0" 210lbs, 31 yrs old Schlereth begins his first season with the Ducks and 11th in professional baseball. He comes to Long Island with four seasons of Major League experience, including one year with the Arizona Diamondbacks (2009) and three with the Detroit Tigers (2010-12). In 94 appearances, he compiled a 5-6 record with a 4.35 ERA, one save and 91 strikeouts over 93 innings of work. The Alaska native also made three postseason appearances with the Tigers in 2011 as Detroit reached the American League Championship Series. He made his Major League debut on May 29, 2009, pitching a perfect inning of relief against the Atlanta Braves. The 31-year-old spent the 2017 season in the Miami Marlins organization, pitching at three different levels.  Ducks Slip Past Southern Maryland, 2-1  Waldorf, Maryland; Opening day festivities have begun throughout the league. Fans of the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs were eager to watch Robert Morey square off against Wander Perez of the visiting Long Island Ducks. In the end, the Ducks won the game, 2-1, with Wander Perez earning player of the game honors. Long Island used the timely hitting of Dan Lyons to seize the win. The shortstop stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the tenth inning to put the Ducks on top, 2-1. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer. Ducks ink former Nationals Slugger Morse to Contract April 28, 2018 at 8:49 AM
WALDORF, Maryland. - Looking for a little more pop from the right side of the plate and perhaps someone to platoon with David Washington at 1b, the Long Island Ducks announced today that they have agreed to terms with former MLB slugger Mike Morse. Morse has spent time with the Mariners, Nationals, Orioles, Marlins, Pirates and Giants over the course of his 13 year big league career, highlighted by his 31 home run and 95 RBI season back in 2011 with the Nationals. Injuries have taken its toll on the 36 year old 1b, having not played more than 24 games in the past two seasons. He will be in uniform for the series finale tomorrow against Southern Maryland, and to make room for Morse, the Ducks have placed 2b Cody Puckett on the Inactive List. The Ducks also signed 25 year old infielder Drew Turbin to a contract and placed him on the Inactive List. Turbin was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 14th round of the 2015 MLB Amateur draft from Dallas Baptist University, but he has struggled with the bat, only mustering a .219 career batting average in 906 plate appearances. |

Southern Maryland first baseman Devon Rodriguez earned the nod as player of the game. He hit 3 home runs. The save was credited to Cody Eppley, his 1st. The win gives the Blue Crabs a record of 1-1. Independent League Baseball has always intrigued me. I live 28 minutes away from two Frontier League teams, the River City Rascals and the Gateway Grizzlies across the river. Been to many games in both stadiums, played a vintage league baseball game GCS Stadium. Fun times, good baseball and family friendly atmospheres without breaking the bank for third row seats behind home plate. Trying to get All Star tickets this season at Car Shield Field and maybe some home run derby tickets.

Ducks take series, Win in 13, 5 to 3 Waldorf, Maryland: Darren Ford left his imprint on the 5-3 Long Island win against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. Ford went 2-4 with a home run and a walk, while scoring 2 runs. Long Island, now 2-1, has played well in the early going. Wilkin Castillo had a nice at-bat for the Ducks with two out in the top of the 13th. With a runner on 1st, the catcher struck out, which would prove important in the Long Island win. Mike Morse made his Atlantic League debut, knocking in the game's first run with a sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning, but that was all he could muster, going 0 for 5 with a strike out. Patriots Raise Rally Flag, Beat Ducks, 6-4  Bridgewater Township, New Jersey: The Patriots grabbed the first game of the series with a 6 to 4 win at TD Bank Ballpark, overcoming a fine effort from Long Island pitcher Jake Fisher. Fisher went 5 innings and allowed no earned runs, walking 3 and striking out 3. He was relieved in the 6th by Ashur Tolliver, who allowed just 1 hit and striking out 3 in 2 scoreless innings of work. Then the bottem fell in as Rob Rogers allowed 4 runs on 2 hits and 2 walks in 2/3 of an inning and then Francisco Rodriguez gave up the walk off homer in the bottom of the 9th. The winner was Dustin Molleken in relief. His record improves to 1-0. Francisco Rodriguez took the loss. The Patriots raised their record to 3-1. Julio Borbon chipped in for Somerset with a 2-run home run in the bottom of the ninth. For the game, the center fielder had 2 hits in 5 at-bats with 1 home run, 1 single, 2 runs scored, and 2 RBI. "It's great to get the crowd pumped up," Borbon said. With one out, Lew Ford came to bat, hoping to do some damage. Instead, he struck out. The score remained 2-0, Somerset. The Ducks saw their comeback bid fail. One bright spot was newly signed Mike Morse got his first hit of the season. "It's good that it's out of the way, but I just wish it could have come with a runner in scoring position", he said.
