Anyone else get bogged down....
Does anyone else get bogged down in creating the perfect universe that you never actually play the game?
![]() I have started 5-6 different ideas foe universes since 19 came out and I haven't managed to play the game much. I think we need to create more quickstarts for this reason. Give folks a lot of options so that they don't have to create them on their own. |

I would enjoy seeing more quickstart examples both to try out or for ideas.

Yes, I do...right now I am obsessed with trying to find a realistic way to mimic Cuban defectors while still running the Cuban league |

Certainly I have started and stopped several universes because I wasn't happy with them, but isn't the creation of the universe a large part of the fun? You are one of the senior posters and as much of an expert as any of us. I would probably love to play one the universes you have discarded as much as one Markus creates. Perhaps instead of the development team doing quickstarts the community could create quickstarts and post them as mods. As a historical player I am sure I would enjoy the work of other historical players. A concerted effort from the community could certainly create dozens of interesting fictional, current and historical quickstarts to be downloaded. EDIT: I just reread your post and perhaps what you are suggesting is the same thing I am. There is no doubt I would try historical quickstarts created by the community. In the meantime I will continue with my historical league I started in 1973.

That is 100% me. I get an idea and once i finally get it setup i then in my head start thinking this is not realistic and would never work and start over.
I have such an issue with a small 8-10 team league having minor leagues for some reason, in my head i feel it has to be a bigger league to have minors but hate playing bigger leagues. but..........................my new idea is the always the next best one. |

yer not alone, my friend! i keep telling myself i'm going to continue my old game even when new versions come out. ... but i ALWAYS end up ditching them for a new idea in the new game because it's always got a least 1 feature i can't leave alone. This year - 2-way players. Just great for early baseball era.

In a fleeting secondary thought, I made the quickstart comment. Your second impression is the correct one. I think the community could be creating more quickstarts. I think what OOTP gives us is right for what they are doing. If I had a complaint with the stuff that OOTP gives, it would be that the quality of the logos & uniforms should be better. I am hoping to creating more quickstarts with this version. I already created one that hasn't really been put through its paces. I am hoping for some community feedback for it. I am working on something right now that I am planning on playing myself and sharing as a quickstart. My version of what I call a Fictorical league. It will use real teams but with fictional players and the league history won't exactly match real MLB history. |

Oh I do it too. I don't think I had ever played a league more than 3 seasons until my current fictional league. I might go create a new one after reading this.

Yes I have spent over a year creating my fictional country, working out the land, highway systems, populations and mapping out the longitude and latitude of over 500+ cities/towns. Now that I have done that I feel like I need more towns to fill in the blanks....it's a never ending worm hole.
But I have successful compiled over 300 logos and will start making uniforms and wordmarks for them. I should be ready to play the game in 2030.... |

i take my time setting up a league and generally enjoy the process.
i try to be rational about what i get nitpicky about and the amount of effort required to get what i want.. sure i make some mistakes but over the years i've let go of stuff that simply doesn't have a large effect or i was simply irrational about. if it furstrates you, don't do that portion of th settings/setup.. find a way to enjoy the default etc.. or some simpler version of what you were trying to do. some like the challenge and overcoming the obstacles that arise. sometimes you have to admit defeat, too. when pleasure/pride turns to frustration, you've probably crossed that bridge. it's all a heck of a lot easier once you have 1 year under your belt or more... every year i do somethign that in past years i gave up on trying to implement. experience always helps. failures help even more in many respects. mostly early on my biggest mistake was biting off more than i could chew.. trying too many new things concurrently. FWIW, I believe it is possible to try so hard to make your universe "realistic" that you forget to have fun. Once you try to replicate your idea of how baseball should be, then I think you are doomed to disappointment.
I view any universe I start as organic. If I obsess over every box score and player stat then I will quickly find something to quibble about. However I defy anyone to read Baseball Register's real stats, and not wonder how the heck that event happened. For those of us who have played for years I suggest that if you have your league almost the way you want it. Then play it. If you like creating unique universes then you have already chosen to sacrifice realism on the altar of your own imagination.

Short answer: Yes.
Long answer: Yes. I was been stuck in this version trying to decide between starting a dynasty in 2013 or starting in 2018 and actually expanding by two teams. Once I decided on 2013, I decided to actually downsize to 24 and use an NL-style, 12-team schedule (using the original 1990 schedule) for each league but with no doubleheaders. The NL portion of that is fine (though I think there is one schedule doubleheader in there that I will have to split up). And that means I have to create a similar version for the AL since I kicked out Seattle and Toronto. When I tried a shortcut to duplicate the NL half of the schedule, I screwed up something royally. So now I'm going day by day to straighten it out so that I have the schedule perfectly the way I want it because it will serve as a template for future 24-team seasons. So, yeah, I actually haven't played the game too much because I'm extremely particular about how this dynasty proceeds. |

What I've done to somewhat alleviate that problem is I start a new universe... set it up... and then commit to ONLY PLAY 5 seasons. Doing this allows me to go ahead and play the game even if I'm not 100% happy because I know in 5 seasons I can "fix" things. After 5 seasons, I should have a feel for what I liked and didn't like... make a universe.. and repeat. Of course the problem now is that I keep only going 5 seasons lately instead of like the very first universe I had which went over 100.
Okay... so now I'll have to alleviate THAT problem....

Yep. This is me. My most recent one, I spent a good 10 active hours setting up the universe. Then simmed 20 years to see the long term effects of my tweaking. Then lost a couple weeks getting lost in the history and stories of my test league.
