I love this new feature but aargh !

So, I am playing out the second season of my new historical random debut league: we started in 1901 but I am playing with the parameters for 1974 as historical year locked in.

My team, the New Jersey Bluebirds, went 76-78 in 1901.

In 1902, we were floundering in the second half and I traded some good prospects - Ping Bodie for example, and my fifth starter, and some spare change to get Chase Utley and Kenji Johjima. It is an aging Chase Utley, but an aging Utley is an upgrade over an aging Tito Fuentes and an aging Frank Bolling at second base, and Johjima hit well replacing a weak hitting catcher.

We start to win, going from 8 games under .500 to 2 games above .500 and from 10 games out to 4 and a half out of first, with 20 games left in the season.

I get a personal message: CHASE UTLEY OBJECTS TO HAVING HIS WORK ETHIC QUESTIONED. My backup Shortstop, Champ Osteen criticized Utley and they argued. I get a set of options as GM:

DO YOU WANT TO:

1. DO NOTHING
2. RELEASE PLAYER
3. SUSPEND PLAYER FOR FIVE GAMES.

We are in a potential pennant race situation, Utley is hitting .316 since joining the team, and so I do nothing.

Next one week sim, I get another personal message:

CHASE UTLEY OBJECTS TO RICHIE ASHBURN CRITICIZING HIS WORK ETHIC.

This one is more serious: Ashburn is my starting centerfielder, he is hitting over .300 and is my leadoff man. Utley shoved him to the floor. But we are now 5 games out with 14 to go. I need both players. Again, I click DO NOTHING.

So I get two more personal messages. THE TEAM IS UPSET THAT YOU DID NOTHING TO DEAL WITH UTLEY.

and then,

YOUR DOING NOTHING IS HURTING TEAM CHEMISTRY.

Ugh. We end up the season at 76-78 (again!), in fifth place, seven games behind the league-leading (tied for first) Oakland Oaks and Baltimore Orioles (already a nice nature-oriented team name and logo so I left the Orioles and Cardinals alone), with the Cedar Rapids Roosters and Boston Bees tied for second one game behind the leaders - four teams separated at the end of the regular season by one game and WE could have been right in that !

AAARGGGH !!!

as Charlie Brown might have said.

BUT what a GREAT new feature for GMs to have to face. And what a terrible dilemma.

Hope everyone makes nice by the start of next season: we are on five-year recalc using real stats, and Utley should be useful for another season or two. Unless the whole team melts down again in which case I will have to trade him.

Again, AMAZING work by Marcus, Lukas and the whole OOTP team !

Yes it is a great feature that causes us to really have to think.

So I have to ask, when you look back at your decisions, was the addition of an aging Utley, that caused an uproar in your clubhouse, really a plus to the team? Seems to me that except for a short period of time when you moved into first, he was probably the reason you dropped backed out. His work ethic cause the performance of your other players to decline as they worried about him instead of winning.

For me, Utley would have been gone quick or more likely not even traded for. Cancers in the clubhouse really kill a teams performance and they do it fast.

I traded Utley and Johjima for a young Bill Mazeroski and got Birdie Tibbets in the draft. Both need to devwlop. But i will be patient now as both should be good in a couple of years. Hope they get along with rhe orhers.

I had the same message from one of my starting pitchers. I obliged fearing that it may affect my pitchers morale if I refused.

is this only with storylines enabled?

i never got this question last year.. haven't played enough this year, yet.

i think as with everything, you can afford to ignore more stuff if oyu are winning alot and have a 'happier' clubhouse. just like a few malcontents is okay and their negative effect can be neutralized by other factors that cause happiness and a solid clubhouse to some extent.

I never get these kind of messages but have storylines enabled. I don't use coaches or scouts, tho; is that why I don't get storylines?
