Insane unreal contracts

Is anyone else bothered by the insane contracts demands by free agents?

This is just Bryce Harper... I would NEVER pay this much for ANY player. 20-25 mil per year ok maybe but only because he is that good. But $40 million per year? That's crazy talk...Kershaw is the same.

I have not seen anyone get that much, yet. Stanton over 10 years never goes beyond 32million base.. his lowest is 26 mil.

Though I will say it's always hard for me to transition from a strict NHL salary cap world where you see fair salaries across the board to a chaotic out of control salary base such as Major League Baseball.

Just because he asks for it, doesn't mean he will get it. $112 million is a bit low.

That's his real salary with the Yankees if you are referring to Stanton.

In my experiences free agent demands are also higher:

1) If teams have a lot of money to spend and
2) If it's the start of the offseason. Demands often get lower as it gets closer to the season.

Your offer for Harper, age 25 (?) is absurd. Middling players get $20MM a year now.

I find the contact demands now painful, ridiculous, and almost certainly realistic. I am 13 years into a Kansas City Royals career right now and have had to make a LOT of difficult financial decisions because of how well I draft and how strong my farm system is. I never, EVER try to acquire high end talent in free agency. Not ever. If I have a superstar, I sign him to a long term contract a year before he hits Arbitration, and ONLY do it if they're durable.

edit - save for right at the beginning of spring training, that's when you go bargain shopping for high-end relievers with no offers (never get in a bidding war though because they'll end up wanting a TON), a decent starting pitcher, and sometimes a really good bat with awful injury history that's still sitting there unsigned.

Same here and I totally agree with the bargain shopping.

For reference, in my league in 2031 there are 15 players making between 30 and 37m per year. The only outlier being a player of mine who is making 44m in year 1 of a 10 year deal where he's making 8.8m the other 9 years. He's 24 and I signed him to the contact after he had 1 year 104 days of service time and had a boatload of available cap space. He was 72/80 at the time of the signing, was durable, with low greed and high loyalty. Had I waited one more year to sign him he'd have required an extra 50m. Wait a year after that, another 50m+.

Donaldson wants $42.5M to resign with the Jays for 5yrs...Not sure if I'm going to resign him.

Oh, you just wait to see what he gets this off season in real life monfrer! You are definitely trying to low ball him. The guy is 26, pay the man!

I wouldn't if I were you. He is the wrong side of 30 (by a fair amount by 2019 season when new contract would start), his best days are behind him and you should have an up and coming star in Vladdy Guerrero Jr coming that can play 3B. Trade Donaldson at the deadline for the best return possible and watch him become a financial boat anchor for another team in free agency (or heck, trade him and then resign him if you must in free agency if no one else is insane enough to pay him over 40 million a year)!

Do Free Agents decrease their demands over time? If not, it would be a nice addition to OOTP 19.

Yes, they do. Also, remember those are just their demands. The market will determine how much they're going to get. If a player is demanding 42.5, I'd expect them to get somewhere between 30-37.

It's not unrealistic. I think the going rate for a win is $10 million and he's averaged well over 4 WAR per season since he came into the league. By some estimation he's just entering his prime.
