Difference Between Waive and Waive/DFA?

I've been playing for years, but I can't figure out when/why I'd ever just waive a player. I know when a player is out of options I can waive him and designate him for assignment, and after 3 days I can move him down to my minor league system. Makes sense.

But there's also an option to just waive the player, and it'll say "are you sure you want to put the player on irrevocable waivers?" What's the point of that kind of transaction, and why would I use it instead of Waive/DFA?

I think it is when you need to open a roster spot immedialy and have no alternatives for that player. You either don't care if he gets taken or you cross your fingera and hope no one takes him.

Well, if he clears waivers you'll be able to trade him after the July 31st deadline without having to clear him again.

I do not believe that is how the game processes after the non wavier trade deadline. If I am not mistaken once a trade is completed all players go through waivers and if unclaimed the trade goes through. Unless this was changed in 19.

They do by default, but if a player has cleared waivers recently then he wouldn't be put on again.

Now, as mentioned, we don't really give the non-recallable as an option, mostly because it just would be a bunch of busy work.

As for when to use waive vs waive/dfa, I'd agree it's rare. I did just have a case recently: I signed a guy to DH for me. A couple months in, basically had a change of heart. Shopped him around - no real offer (just dead money). So I just waived him. No need to DFA - I was willing to keep him around, but if anyone else wanted him, I was happy to let him go. Someone claimed him, and hopefully all parties are happy
