How does the game decide when to retire #'s?
How does the game decide to retire numbers for various teams, and is there a way to keep them from automatically doing so, or might there be in the future, at least for certain teams? I also don't think a number should necessarily be retired sport-wide, like was done with Wayne Gretzky in the NHL or in MLB and perhaps even MiLB for Jackie Robinson, no matter how good a player was, or no matter what they did on or off the field. Yes, both of those players were excellent in their sports, and the impact that Jackie and Wayne not only each had on their sports and in society and the world were no doubt quite powerful, in many respects, but I still don't think that they ultimately deserved their respective numbers being retired sport-wide in their respective sports, whether baseball or hockey.
And why doesn't the game have numbers available for coaches and/or managers that are shown wearing uniforms on the personnel screens? Just wondering, that's all. As for requiring numbers for players who played before the use of numbers became common and/or required, shouldn't they be able to go without having to use numbers in the game, perhaps? Several Hall of Famers never wore numbers, after all, you know, folks. At least for much, if not most or all, of their respective careers. Especially those from the 19th Century, for sure. if anyone could perhaps answer these questions I have here, and which others may want to know the answers to as well, I'd really appreciate it, and I think others might too. That's all. CD out. |

i think jackie's # is retired in an mlb quickstart for all teams? could be wrong. did you double check available avtions on Retired # screen? maybe it is an option, i wouldn't know. i don't worry about this stuff too much. i just delet the ones that don't make sense for my team and let hte ai do its thing elsewhere.
you can make your own too. Simply load up the player's profile, go to editor, and take note of his player ID. go to reitred # screen and use an existing guy as a template (even if another team).. copy/paste etc.. replace player id and name and fill in whatever you want for the remaining text. It will now link to that players profile. (take not of syntax of how to link to a player - re-useable tag not unlike html tags) sans #, double chekc options for # when you manually retire one on that screen.. if it has a blank option or something. if not, nope, you have to assign a # of some sort listed. you could maybe edit the picture file or somethign and make it just a background ro a specific number you'll never use? maybe? how does it do it... some combinations of stats and time palyed. if oyu observe enough you could deduce the minimums. it's likely far less than what you perceive. proof of concept.. go look up team reocrds for teh 'average' teams.. ie not the yankees or maybe even dodgers/redsox too. it's far less than 1/30th of the hall of fame for ~1/2 the teams. so, if it's set to strict, some teams woudln't have any retired numbers after ~100years. perceptions tend to be skewed high in this realm. ~300hr is a TON of hr, for example, on most teams. top 1-to-5 guys might be over that for many teams. Didn't know you can change settings on retiring numbers as you pointed out as STRICT. Truth be told I never looked for it

i meant in a hardcoded way.. if certain #'s are met in game ,they get retired... it could be somethign simple liek war, but more likely uses multiple metrics, including # of years played for that team.. i'd bet there's some minimum, or maybe it always goes to team with most years etc etc.
if they made it more restrictive, a majority of teams from RL wouldn't qualify for retired #'s. so, it's purposefully not "too restrictive" in it's qualifications so that each team eventualyl does retire some #'s i just mean most perspectives are based on 3000hitters and 500hr hitters.. which there are many teams without either in their history. retired numbers can come from mildly decent players... not all teams require them to be in the HoF or have HoF stats to retire them. Maybe, changing milestones influence this? worth a shot. i'd assume it's relative to the league.. or hope in some way it is relative to baselines. that's the ONLY way to distinguish whom is a "better" palyer. otherwise it's just made up in their heads as fans.
