Steam vs PC - Positives or Negatives?
What is the benefit of using steam for those of you that do? Are there any drawbacks or benefits of buying PC?

steam auto updates your game when you log in to the game - if updates are available. The version (standalone) from the developers you need to download when you want them to be applied. (In either the updates include all availble.) That can be a plus, or minus - depending on your point of view.
steam's workshop isn't as full as Add-Ons Central in the Stand Alone version. It's not a lot, but direct purchase adds a few more pennies in the OOTP developer's pocket. But Steam is a convenient platform and OOTP get lots of sales from it. As far as the game, i've used both and there is no difference i can tell. Some of the folders are located in different folders, but it's all there. You can customize your game on either platform. i like the Stand-Alone from the developers myself. But that's just my preference. Really, unless the add-ons from the private mod developers is important, it's a matter of which you want.

I like the idea of putting extra pennies in the OOTP coffers. I'll stay with PC version. Thanks!

steam brings out the primal me...
"Uggah! boogah!" <flings poop at steam> "Steam, bad! Fire, good." i guess that could be phil hartman's SNL frankenstein wiht a minor modification - i bet he's a steam fan and doesn't like fire. no steam software or intrusive nonsense. margin might be higher for them on esellerate, it may not be too. economies of scale may allow steam to offer better support services than the cost of esellerate... or it may leverage itself and eat a bit more than esellerate. impossible to know just from assumption. i'd wager it's a higher % from esellerate, but ?? the game is no different, either way. that's the key. if it's convenient to use steam, use it. accessibility to your own library of games jsut be logging in is definitely convenient. if i played more than ootp and ~1 other game, if that, i might even eat my own crow. |

I have bought it directly from the developers since OOTP 3. My sole reason being is that they get the full purchase price as opposed to having to share the proceeds with Steam. I am a big fan of Steam, but I would rather support this developer entirely.

My internet stinks so Steam is really my only option. I also like the fact that if I'm ever forced to buy a new computer, I don't have to go searching for my game license and can simply download my game. This could really be important if I'm forced to continue playing OOTP16. I'm anxiously waiting to see if historical gets fixed for 19.

Steam is also really nice that if you need to install the game on more than two PCs then you can.
I have two laptops, a desktop and a Surface Pro 4 I use OOTP 18 on and I can have it on all four at once without juggling licenses. Now if we could only join 2014 and get cloud saves then it would make a great option even better. Can you purchase from OOTP and then add the game to your Steam library? If so then you can avoid Steam taking a cut of the sale and then get the benefits of Steam should you need them. |

does steam let you hold off on updates?
I never patch immediately. O/S or other very importnat and essential security patch? sure... driver or game patch no way... don't do it. let the other monkeys iron out the kinks and frustration. I don't buy a game to do debugging work for them... that's like volunteering for an extra year of auditing before you get your CPA. i.e. work no one wants to do. it's not fun. it's not rewarding. it likely makes you angry at some point and drives you to alcohol or some other vice of preference. ![]() an small company game like ootp, i understand even though i won't contribute much out of principle. however big companies play this game too... while both can probably afford not to in the first place, one is way more greedy than the other. (hint: it's not the "mom and pop" store equivalent) Last edited by NoOne; 02-23-2018 at 08:00 PM. |

The portability of Steam is great. I see no reason to believe there will be cloud saved games any time soon.
The things Steam provides me are game portability, cloud saves and the workshop. Those three are not as applicable to OOTP as they are with other games.

zip up the .lg folder and email it to yourself before you go mobile or when done playing. or google drive or somethign free... plenty of options for a few gigs of space -- significantly less with just 'normal' compression due to the type of files invovled.
hmm, bet you can make it a script to automatically zip and upload to a url etc. modify somethign that may already exist for online leagues? online storage is easy either way. The 2 license thing is the drawback for that type of use. if steam users can do it, then you should be able to also, imo. take from that what you will. i only speak of the logic, not the means/suggestion to make it so ![]() |

I used the steam version the last two times I purchased... because I guess I didn't think about it, and I also guess because I got tired of juggling licenses.
But I've been disappointed with the Steam Workshop, and apparently Add-On Central is the place to be. I'm not sure why we can't use Add-on Central with the Steam version, but it's a frustration. |

I don't care for Steam. I'm happy to send the hard-working folks at OOTP Developments a few extra sheckles for their troubles, and I don't think I'll be using the Steam version any time soon. I like the fact that the updates are ready to go right away with the e-sellerate version, and since my internet is largely solid, downloading is a snap for me. I can see where you'd want Steam if you had a lousy internet setup, but I'm alright...For now.
I also hear that the Steam Workshop is not as complete as Add-Ons Central, and that's probably my number one reason for not having Steam. Why would I want to shut myself out from any of the amazing work of the modding community here? It's e-sellerate all the way for me. |

Now what about Origin as well? I have both that and Steam. If I get OOTP19 for both can I play two different games at the same time? Two different leagues I really mean.

steam won't allow 2 to run from same ip? you can answer that just by trying.
ugh steam-type setups are so dangerous! it's going to pinch more money out of people inthe long run. promote pay-to-win and all that nonsense too (not for ootp but in a general sense for applicable games). this idea that you only get to run 1 game in your household is a new concept.. WTF? really? i buy it and they tell me how to use it. these people are nuts! i suggest: don't listen to them. do what you must to use it as you intend.. not for re-distribution of course. e.g. jailbreak that phone from japan you bought off ebay and load it onto your wireless account ![]() you can have as many leagues as you want in the saved game folder... just in case that was the question ![]() _________________ side note: syntax error in signature. I can't be logged into 2 instances of Steam at the same time!!! WTF? I have one computer playing ROCKSMITH and another OOTPB. I have to logout in order to play. Also OOTPB appears to only store your game LOCALLY. So I dont seem to be able to play on my desktop, Then later take my laptop outside to play some more..... ![]() |

Interestingly not having automatic updates is considered a huge plus by some who buy OOTP direct. To me that is the only negative on the steam side.
