Setting up historical league issue

I know there is a little more than a month before the new version comes out, but I just purchased OOTP 18 last night because I am burned out on Madden and am ready for baseball to commence.
I wanted to set up a 30-team league with each franchise represented by the best team it had from 2000-16.
Except for a couple of cases, World Series champions would get first choice, followed by WS qualifiers, CS qualifiers etc. Tie-breakers for the most part would be regular-season record.
Unfortunately, this would leave out the 2017 Houston and Dodgers team which both would have qualified. This will mean the 2006 Astros, who won the NL, will be playing in the AL West. The Dodgers will be represented by their 2012 team.
I will be running and managing the 2004 STL Cardinals.
While that team did not win the World Series, getting run over by a freight train disguised as the Boston Red Sox, it was a much better team than the 2006 and 2011 squads that did and should do much better in this kind of format.
Anyway, I set the league up the way I thought I was supposed too, but when I opened it up, it was all fictional players.
Was there a box I did not check or is it something else?
Any help would be appreciated.

I feel you with Madden. I picked up 18 recently for similar reasons.

You can do what you want but I think it's more involved than you expected. I believe you have to release and delete all of the fictional players and then import each player onto their team individually IIRC.

It would be nice to be able to import a team from a certain year and the game to do this for us.

Have you followed the instructions in the manual? They’re pretty straightforward. Basically, you set up the structure, number of teams, etc., as though you were creating a fictional league. Then you click the button to switch to historical teams. You can then insert your chosen historical teams into the league.
