Alternate Reality: What's with those modern pitchers?
I've just finished the 2017 season in a fictional alternate reality simulation that started in 1871. (I've been working on this for 9 months or so). I was going for a fictional simulation that still nevertheless kept fairly close to how baseball developed IRL. I used historical financials, historical player creation modifiers and did the auto-recalc each year to keep the stats close to real life.
Now it's time to see how the two worlds compare statistically. I'm kind of thinking I'll do this with a handful of different threads. This is my second thread on the topic. My simulation produced a few great modern hitters, but no great modern pitchers, (modern being, post-1920, say, but especially post-1946). In my world, there was no Roger Clemens, no Randy Johnson, no Greg Maddux, no Tom Seaver, no Bob Gibson, and no Pedro Martinez. It was a boring world when it came to pitching. I'm thinking my best modern pitcher topped out around Curt Shilling level. My best post-war pitcher by JAWS comes in at 66.1, 41st on my all time list (dominated by pitchers from the early days) Now, in general my simulation was a little flat - although I had a few great hitters in my simulation, they still didn't measure up to the best IRL. That's a topic for the next post in this series. But at least I had a few great hitters. But no truly great modern pitchers. What's up with that? I really don't have any idea what might be causing this or how to address it the next time around. Any ideas? Anyone else see something similar in their fictional sims? Yeah I've noticed something similar even in my normal games the further I get into modern era. I think the reason is that the game has a tendency to creste less outlier players (I.e. Even if the average league stats are the same it'll have less variance between the top and bottom players in the league) so it's not common to have crazy ridiculous guys putting up all-time seasons, especially in pitching because no one has high stamina. For example, my modern era top batters will usually only be like 7-8 WAR max rather than the crazy 9-10 seasons we'll see from top league guys with less absolute **** hatters still starting on teams, and my top pitchers can sometimes be very pedestrian 5-6 WAR years
