More Roster Rules Inquirer

This is another one of those deals which feels like a cheat to me, but I am unsure. If it is...I'd really love to tie up these loose ends in 2018.

If your rotation & bullpen is absolutely dead tired...and you've decided you're going to have to promote a player to try to fix the issue, but you can't demote anyone from the active roster due to players not having option years and/or refusing demotion.

My question is, as per MLB rules, are you allowed to put one of these pitchers on the DFA list temporarily, with the full intent of bringing them back to the active roster once his rest status returns to full or near full?, and then demote whomever you don't wasn't on the active roster back to the minors?

It’s my understanding this is illegal under mlb rules. I believe you have to trade or release the player within the 10 days if he refuses the outright assignment to minors.

This is the key issue in bold.

Quote:
Outright from the 40-man roster[edit]
If the player clears waivers when being designated for assignment, he can most commonly be "outrighted" from the 40-man roster and transferred to the roster of a Minor League affiliate of the parent club. Outrighting can also happen to a player who is already in the minors, but is occupying a 40-man roster space that the organization wishes to fill with some other player. A player can only be outrighted without his consent once in his career.
