Rehab Stints?
When should you and when shouldn't you assign a player coming off the DL to a minor league rehab stint?
Coming off the 15 day DL? 60? Thanks

I always do for 60 Day DL, unless i need him badly. I will if i dont have an open roster spot for him until i see how he does in the minors while i evaluate the ML player. If he is a good or great player i will not bother after the 15 day DL.

Got a prospect who made his MLB debut in the season opener. He was raking through 4 games and then pulled a hamstring and is out 2 weeks. Trying to decide what to do with him when he returns.

I usually only do rehab if a player is out 3 weeks or more. How long I have them down depends on how long there were out. For 3 weeks I’d only keep him down like 4 or 5 games for example

there are threads about this with more info. not sure if their ratio is correct or not, but there is a rule of thumb out there. i won't misquote it by memory.
simply: how long the rehab stint is contingent on how long they were on the DL or offseason.. even a FA off an active roster for too long is the same deal. maybe personality has an effect? never tried to look into it, but there may be some layers of sophistication involved in the calculation beyond simply # of days, but that's the bulk that is affected by those smaller, possible things. |

I only use a rehab stint if I want to delay putting the player on my roster. I have seen no substantial difference in their play level.

if it's less than 14 days, i don't belive rust occurs.
it's allso not on/off type issue... 14days may equate to an iota of rust that is insignificant, but nonetheless is the starting point of rust. one thing i know for sure, you can not tell with your eye 99% of the time due to sample size. players go 0-10 all the time. impossible to distinguish wihtout recording and analyzing results. in extreme cases it may be obvious... take 100 players, leave them in FA until opening day (offseason rust), assign to teams, then watch them all suck for the first month or 2. i bet ~80-90% look terrible in that context, but just a guess. do that same trial with 14days off actice roster, 28days, 50 days, 100 days etc etc. for a baseline. then re-do with varying lengths of rehab stints... that is the only way to learn how long you'll need.. then extrapolate for points in between the curve or line should become obvious to visualize... if someone has not done this and says tehy "know" ... well...
