Historic Personnel, please
Another "one and done" that I would like to see implemented. All the data is right there in Wikipedia and BB-reference and BB-almanac and so on.
There's no reason for the "Walter Alston" managing the Dodgers in the 1969 game I'm trying to start up should be surrounded by fictionals when we know who was actually on the staff: Danny Ozark as bench coach, Red Adams as pitching coach, Jim Gilliam hitting coach, Al Campanis GM, and Walter O'Malley owner. We even have ratings on Ozark from his (later) days as Manager of the Phillies (and, briefly, the Giants), so why shouldn't he be in his proper slot here? As for those who don't as yet have coach ratings, even using proper names with randomly-generated ratings would be preferable to fictionals, in terms of historical immersion, IMO. And of course, if the v.19 team wants to craft specific coach ratings for those personnel, even better. We also have the entire raft of historic minor-league managers as well, although fictional coaches might be needed at the lower levels. But there's no reason for some faked-up "Cody Gentile" managing in Spokane, when we know that it was actually Tommy LaPasta. Er, LaSorda. But you knew that, that's the point. Thanks in advance. |

As you note the data needed for this is all over the place. If you gather it all together into some semblance of usability I am sure it could be added to the game. As it stands it does not exist in any coherent form.

I actually meant that it was available in multiple places, not that it was divided among them, but sure I can put together a basic list. Would you like it by team or by year?
The first GM was Billy Evans (former AL umpire) with the 1927 Indians. Do we want other prominent officials before that, or will we just leave it vacant/fictional? Also, while the pitching coach usually stands out among those listed with any given team, sometimes the hitting and bench coaches are a bit of a guess. (For the 1969 Dodgers given above, I eliminated bullpen coach Carroll Berringer [ex-bp pitcher] and decided that Alston more likely relied on Ozark, who joined the staff in 1965, as his right-hand man, over 1967 addition Roy Hartsfield, but I don't know that for sure.) Would you like guesses, or just a listing of all coaches for a particular team? |

See the attached files for the current state of this MLB data. Feel free to add a GM column to it.
The player importer for the minor league portion uses the full team name and full league name. Managers were often/usually player managers as were the coaches. One way to tell which player was also a coach is using the players age. A 35 year old who was not the manager on a team of 23 year olds was a player/coach. It would be appropriate to guess the coach role he fulfilled by his playing position.

Thanks. How come the size adjustments are greyed out (and how do I fix them)? I'm going to go blind if I have to work with this mouse-type-sized font…

They are Excel spreadsheets so it depends on how and with what you are opening them with. One is a newer Excel format than the other. That is just how they came to me.
If you need csv versions please let me know.
