Extremely slow, 'not responding', crashes

I'm getting a little frustrated with this game, which is unfortunate because 1) its a great great concept and I've been searching for a game like this and 2) its not cheap.

From day one, the game has been EXTRMELY slow. I have only been doing simulations throughout a season -- no in game play -- and I only have one league. When I go to sim a chunk of time, the game seems to freeze, and everytime the window grays out a little and I get a (Not Responding) next to the OOTP18 script in the top left. Usually, after a few minutes, something happens that interrupts my sim like a trade offer or injury.

I've been trying to just push through for about two weeks now because, again, ive been searching for a game like this. I'm finally nearing the end of my first regular season, and the game has now crashed on me today 3 times, losing the most recent progress. It crashes mid-sim. I really don't think its my computer -- it is less than one month old. I've tried adjusting firewall settings and all sorts of suggestions I've read on Reddit, but with zero luck. OOTP Developments, please help me, otherwise I'm going to be a really disappointed customer.

OOTP baseball includes lots of details. Lots of number crunching. In my typical leagues, I run a season over night. Sometimes with a MLB size league and my typical settings, a season can take several real-life days to simulate.

There are some tricks I've used for quicker long-term simming:
There are some manager settings, league settings, and game settings.

I'm not able to look at the game to give you details at the moment.

One setting is something like "interrupt game for trade proposals", "interrupt sim for injuries", ...
And there is also a checkbox somewhere to set the manager "on vacation", which more or less means the AI (Artificial Intelligence) manages and runs your team. i.e. Your non-human managers make all necessary decisions while you are "on vacation".
I think those are on the manager settings page.

Also, the level of detail can be reduced for quicker simming.
For example, "very high detail" (statistics), "keep all logs", frequency of "automatic backups", "update facegen", almanac generation (I never generate almanacs intentionally...preferring to just archive my leagues manually, external from the OOTP 18 game), etc. which are on the league settings screen(s).
