Use GB to determine League winner (not PCT)
I played a Historical 1903 season with real lineups
The final standings ended up like this: American League Team W L Pct GB CLE 90 50 .643 - PHA 87 48 .644 1/2 The A's were a half game behind Cleveland, but had a winning Pct that was just .001 point higher. The game declared the A's the pennant winner and sent them to the Worlds Series. I say that Game Behind should be used instead of winning Pct. Or the seasoin extended and the extra games should be made up (since they effect the final standings) |

MLB rules use winning percentage. In reality, obviously any missing games would be made up to make sure teams are even, but if your default schedule doesn't have even games then it's possible this scenario could occur.

The games wouldn't necessarily be made up. For a trip down memory lane, see LGO's reply from 2002 on a related topic (#9).
http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...ad.php?t=11378 My understanding is the AL adopted a rule for 1909 requiring teams to play all games that would impact the final standings. I don't know when the NL did the same. |
