OOTP 18 Scaling on a Retina iMac?
Hello,
Does anyone here play OOTP18 on a Retina iMac (either the 21.5" 4k or 27" 5k)? If so, how does the game (or MacOS) handle scaling the resolution of the game to Retina/Hi-DPI screens? Looking at getting an iMac for other projects, and I'm hoping it does a better job with upscaling than Windows 10 does. I have a Surface Pro 4 that is almost unplayable with OOTP18 (either the text is ridiculously tiny, or the upscaling turns the game into a blocky, lo-res mess, or I have to switch to a custom resolution to play the game), and even hooked up to a 24" 4k monitor, the results are not great. I'm hoping that Markus and co. can put some love into improving how the game handles Retina type screens for OOTP19! Screens get smaller, resolution gets more pixel-dense, and my eyes get worse every year... ![]() ![]()

going from 1080p to 4k is significantly invovled more than 720 to 1080. upscalig is ALWAYS junk, fyi... some wil look better than others but you cannot put lipstick on a pig.
just like 4k tv;s... it's probably going to be a little fuzzy with upscaling. also, it had nothign to do with the OS (win10)... it's all about your video card and software decoders. install MadVR with some ultra settings should do you nicely for video playback... vid card settings for how games look. if you want larger text, you either need a lower resolution or increase text in the game... if the game doesn't support 4k natively, then the text you see is also upscaled lower res images, which can cause pixelation. if you increase reso, text get's smaller => that's how it is supposed to work. it stays in scale... it's using the same number of dots to draw that character in a smaller space ... ie higher resolution. you want a lower reso than 4k... (for what it's worth, every image you see on a 4k screen is 4k... even the 1080p signal from a blueray is displayed at 4k. the tv will scale all to its native resolution) so, even if you use "1080p" you are still seeing it in 4k (the pc doesn't draw any more detail is best way to think of it and the tv is filling in the gaps automatically every single time you see an image take up the full screen of that monitor/tv)

An update, if anyone is interested:
I ended up buying the iMac (27"), and when running at full-screen, Mac OS does end up rendering OOTP 18 at 2560x1440 but displaying it at the full 5120x2880 resolution, but the results look much better than they did in Windows 10. In Windows 10, the pixel-doubling made everything look very blocky/chunky/fuzzy, like watching an old SD sitcom on an HDTV. The Mac's video drivers and/or OS are doing whatever sorcery Apple has cooked up to make it look like that's the monitor's native resolution -- no blocky/fuzzy text or graphics. I've been really impressed with Windows 10 for the most part, but Microsoft has got a long way to go to get the HiDPI/Retina display thing baked in as well as Apple. |
