This is from the standard game with default financials and roster rules. There is no DH in the NL so the Rockies apparently have nothing to do with Butler. They should have known this before signing him but mistakes happen. However, there is no reason to sign him again. He obviously refuses to be demoted so they hold him for the DFA period and release him again. They repeat the error a third time. Then the Brewers get in on the act, finally upping the ante by signing Butler to a larger contract on their third try.
