Frustrating 3D Gameplay

3D gameplay has definitely been improved however I am finding 2 occurrences that seem to happen more so since the 3D upgrades.

1. So many times a fly ball will be hit to one of the outfielders and they will just stand there and let it drop in front of them. Likewise, they will also run back and let the ball land in front of them.

2. 3-5 times a game a ball hit right at an IF will simply go through their 3D "body". This includes balls that are hit softly.

3. It seems nearly every other flyball caught by an OF is the result of a diving catch.

I realize it is generating the results of a simulation but seeing these occur onscreen is killing my drive to keep playing. I've played OOTP for years and have loved all the improvements. Perhaps, these issues can be improved upon next year?

1. We're aware of and Matt's figuring out how to deal with it for next year. It's a mismatch between the 3d and the pbp, these are typically plays that should go into the gap just beyond the of'ers reach or just over their head.

2. Guess I don't see the issue here. How many times does a ball go just under a fielder's glove irl or maybe just barely beyond their reach? It's not an uncommon occurrence, and this is pretty much what's being modeled here afaik.

3. I generally see maybe 5-10 diving catches per game. Is that a bit too many? Yeah probably, but this is something that's hard to get just right. It's something Matt's also aware of, and we'll definitely be looking to tweak this for next year as well.

The problem with the diving catches is that whenever an outfielder dives for the ball he always catches it. It would be nice to have him only trap it once in a while so it goes as a hit.

Diving catches ?!? ... Byron Buxton is everywhere!


It's been a great improvement to the game with the 3D animations this year.
Obviously it is still a work in progress, but the progress this year has been an extremely wanted/welcome improvement. Thank you.

Yeah, that's true and it's another thing we'll surely get to for next year.

I think what we have now is a huge improvement on last year though, or even from the initial release this year.

We added a ton this year with the animations and pbp thanks to Matt, Jorin and pstrickert. With some of this we figured it'd be better to at least add the new features now, even if they aren't 100% perfectly polished, so you can at least enjoy them and get a taste for them in this version of the game, rather than waiting till next year.
