What are some other popular fun ways to play besides standard?
I think I have played standard league as long as I have played ootp which is over 10 years. I'm wondering what are some other fun ways I can play this game? I think a feeder league would be fun but don't those have a lot of issues? Are there any popular current already made quickstarts available where I can download it and jump in and play in a fun new baseball universe?

Just my opinion here but feeder leagues are more of a means to an end than a way to play. They are not buggy, but they are often more trouble than they are worth since a mature 30+ team ML with 4 or more levels of minors requires so many feeder teams to fill a draft class. These feeders are real leagues, playing real games that slow performance of the game. The only use I've found for them is when playing "stats only" (ratings turned off) it makes it less of a guessing game since the draft class has a statistical history.
There are several on the OOTPB Mods page (link below). Most are a little older now but should still work. You may have to star them in older versions and import to OOTP18. http://www.ootpmods.com//tiki-index....page_ref_id=78 My suggestion is make your own fictional baseball league. There are years and years of professional grade logos, caps, and uniforms on the mods page of this very forum. TX Ranger, eriqjaffe, Robo, Hockeyplaya, Cephasjames, & justafan (just to name a few) have made gigbytes of excellent quality logos & uniforms to make hundreds of fictional teams. Give those a look and start your own. Last edited by Mr. Marlin; 07-29-2017 at 07:35 PM. |

Fictional.
It is like a journey into the abyss. You may perish but if lucky you may play 180 seasons of gripping Baseball.

Online (a good league - real rosters or fictional - and even real becomes fictional eventually)?

Do what I did this year. Upload a historic game. I chose 1994. Then release all the players and delete all the teams. Create a three tiered promotion/relegation league with 72 teams total. Have a draft, and have some fun. Allow fictional players to make it to the majors.

I've started a no rating just stats league fictional. It's been quite fun so far but makes you really learn to understand stats. Makes for an interesting draft also.

My favorite way to play is by expanding MLB by two teams and taking on one of them (there's a lot of speculation around this, anyway). Fast sim season 1, then expand on the first day of the offseason so you can have a full offseason of transactions to start building. It's also fun to take this opportunity to reorganize divisions - I do 4 divisions of 4 teams each, and expand the playoffs by 1 to 6 teams each (similar to the NFL with byes). The only problem with this method is you need to turn Challenge Mode off because you can't edit league structure with it on
- I just don't like uneven divisions created with 32 teams and only 6 divisions total.

I usually create a fictional league with MLB structure & minors in 1977 (my birthyear), simulate to 2017 and then pick a random team or run an inaugural draft. I love checking out the history of the league and its records, and then learning about the current teams and players. For me it is more immersive than playing a standard game...

In this version of OOTP I'm playing a historical league that starts in 1901. Oh wait... I do that with every new version. This time I'm not managing any team. I'm watching particular pitcher duels and games that have meaning in the standings. I'm also watching how the yearly (2017) quick start plays out. I've never played the QS before in any version.
The 3D graphics are now good enough to hold my interest in watching out games. So good in fact that I do not even miss watching the real thing. I do not miss twenty-four or more batters playing with their gloves and kicking or hitting their cleats with a bat. If that comes about just make sure to have an option to turn it off. Thank you Markus and team, for your non-ending dedication to this masterpiece. |
