Giants GM Series.
![]() A letter from the Owner, Larry Baer. Brian Corwin GM, San Francisco Giants, Brian, on October 14th, 2016 I wrote a letter to the team that opened, “I hoped we would still be playing right now. We all did. Tuesday’s loss was about as tough as it gets in baseball. Yet I find myself thinking about how proud I am of this team who — despite the ups and downs of the second half – battled their way into a wild card berth and were among the four National League teams still playing in October. That says a lot about the character of our players, coaches, front office and, of course, our fans." Things haven't changed and even though we are changing things up in the front office, I hope we can continue branding ourselves as players, coaches, and administrators of character. I have a list of goals that I would like you to complete, they will be milestone to mark our progression for both our relationship in the front office, and with our fans. First I would like you to do your absolute best on achieving a winning record. We still have some big names in the rotation and many of top-tier batters in our dugout. I think we can achieve a winning record, and this will be priority number one. Second I would like you to try and get an extension out of Hunter Pence, he is our Rah-Rah guy, and a natural leader. Sure he spends more time hurt on the DL each season, but while he is healthy he is the one keeping peoples morale higher, our players motivated, and our fans coming to the park. Third, I think a Great Glove award winner is doable - Brandon Crawford, Joe Panik, and Eduardo Nunez have great ability fielding the ball. If they look like they won't win the award, go get someone who will. Fourth, I think we can get one more World Series before 2022. That gives you 5 years to make it happen. Don't disappoint me!. Interview with KNBR - Giants Radio
Welcome back Giants fans, you're going to love this! On the 12 0'clock hour we'll be interviewing the interim General Manager of our very own San Francisco Giants, and we're going to get to know him as well as ask him some of the tougher questions. You won't want to miss it, stay tuned...
Welcome back everyone, as we promised, joining us is interim General Manager Brian Corwin, who is starting out his career in the front office. You can imagine a lot of thought went into this hiring and there is a lot riding on his shoulders at this time. We have already played a month of baseball and we haven't seen too many roster moves and there hasn't been any big splashes as of yet. Brian welcome to San Francisco, and welcome to KNBR A: Thanks for having me, it's always a pleasure to come out and address the fans in a direct manner. Q: Brian, I am not going to sugar coat some of these question (Brian: Bring it on! *chuckles*) What was going through your mind when you got hired as the Interim GM of the Giants? A: Well to be honest I was a bit surprised. Bobby Evans became the Senior Vice President and General Manager of Baseball Operations in 2015 and in his short term as GM the team went 84-78 in 2015, and 87-75 in 2016. Those aren't horrible numbers and I always seen him as happy with his job. It was completely unexpected that he would uproot himself and transplant to another organization. Q: Have you had any time to evaluate your players and figure out what you have, in your big picture? A: Well yes and no. Yes we have a lot of core guys here who are were around for the World Series' in 2010, 2012, and 2014. While I like our chemistry and how things are going right now - we are utilizing the 4th highest payroll in all of the Majors at something around $218,000,000, that number can very quickly become burdensome if we don't keep our contracts in order. Mad-Bum, Belt, Crawford, Pence, Kontos and several others have been here at least since the 2012 World Series so we've had a good group of core guys, which I would hate to break up... but we'll see what happens going forward. Q: Brandon Crawford picked up a 10 game suspension for fighting with Jared Weaver. This moments are always scary for a club because suspensions are inevitable, injuries are very real and can happen quickly, and it can greatly have affect the morale of the team for better or for worse. What is your take? A: Fights should never happen, but I won't say I am all that upset. Crawford is a fan favorite and usually makes the right choice when it comes to keeping his emotions in check. I tend to look at these incidents at a case-by-case basis... did the player feel the build up to the incident was intentional? was the fight in self defense or was it instigated? You get the picture. Q: MLB pundents have rated your minor league system at 28th out of 30th in terms of overall quality. What are your plans going forward? A: I think we have a lot of talent in the AAA and AA level clubs. We need to work on long term depth though. I plan to spend a lot of time preparing for the amateur draft and looking at international amateur free agents when the time comes. The Giants have always made good use of our international complex and signing prospects that end up staying with the club long term, we just have to go back to fundamentals and get our payroll in order and I think we can make some deals to help make that 28th ranking a little better. I am not a spend big to make big improvements kind of guy - I want to keep the culture of the team in tact and make smart baseball moves. Superstars are great. They are even better when you scouted, signed, developed, and debuted them on your own. Q: Right now the team sits at 17-9 after the first month, thoughts? A: Well it's early yet, we have been lucky with the injuries so far. Guys are getting knicks, bumps and bruises but so far there has been not to many major injuries which has helped us a lot. The less I have to promote and demote players the more rested they will be, the less injuries occur, and so forth. If it isn't broke, don't fix it. I typically give minor league players 250AB or 100IP at each minor level to see if they are ready for a promotion. But when it comes to the majors, i tend to not tie up the 40 man roster in those small $500,000 minimum contracts. That is part of the plan of downsizing our payroll. Q: Well folks there you have it, Brian, it has been a pleasure! A: Thanks for having me, I look forward to spending the next 4-5 years here. I have lots of plans in store but they will take time. I appreciate this opportunity and will not let you down. Thanks again. Last edited by cooperthegiantscat; 07-26-2017 at 08:52 PM. |

May Interview with KNBR - Giants Radio
Q: With the signing of International Amateur Jorge Castro (Starting Pitcher), is this the sign of a future star in the organization?
A: Well we certainly never write anyone out of the majors especially before they have a chance to progress. Jorge is 17 years old about to be 17 years old but his scouting reports shows he will have to work very hard to have any kind of career. Q: Buster Posey fractured his hand at the start of the month, recent reports show that he is nearing 100% and ready to play. Can you elaborate? A: Well all indications is that he will be fine. Right now we are only 2 games behind Los Angeles and have an upswing in momentum, we want Buster to come back 100% and we don't see any rush if he isn't quite there yet. We will likely send him down to Sacramento for a week to give him time to stretch it out and slowly ease back into game shape before we have him calling games in the big leagues. Q: Denard Span was awarded with the NL Player of the Week. You must be proud seeing veteran leadership preforming day-in and day-out. A: D-Span has been great this season. I think he is hitting something like .308 over his last 10 games on top of a .313 season. He works hard everyday and we expect nothing less from him. Hes a great role model for the younger kids trying to figure out their stride. Q: Your team is sitting at 34-21 on the season right now? Is this a year to think about another World Series? A: I will let the fans fantasize about World Series Championships and all that. It would be great to add #4 on this impressive decade but I won't be disappointed if we don't. We have to keep plugging away and as long as the numbers keep improving, and things keep going our way, we may be set for another big season. Q: As always its a pleasure to have you here on the home of San Francisco Giants Radio! A: Thanks for having me! |

Q: The team slid a little, now 8 games out on the Dodgers. With the trade deadline looming are you going to be making any moves?
A: Well it's a tough call. At this point we are all in on aiming for a "win now" mentality" but we also have to look at the big picture and reduce payroll going into next year. We're looking at shopping around Nunni and Samardijza and hope that will leave us with enough in the tank to finish on a stronger note. Q: Conner has major league experience, is he an everyday starter? A: Well Conner will taking on a large majority of the starts for the rest of the season. We got Kelby on the DL who will be healthy soon. We plan on purchasing his contract and giving him some limited big league starts. Q: What goes into choosing a starter for a big leaguer when you don't have a top-tier players to choose from? A: Well lets look at Conner for example - he isn't putting up Nunni numbers but he is a suitable starter, he is walking 8% of the time, striking out 14% of the time... looking at those two numbers in relation to the league averages, he is an above average player. His OBP is at a .330 which is about right for a big leaguer. Power wise he is down a little but that will come with time. Over all he is more than capable at his position and that is a lot of why we made the Nunni trade in the first place. Q: Are there any moves left to make at this point? A: Well we are hoping someone will bit on Samardija but we aren't going to speculate at this time. Everyone here has a lot to give so we are in it to win it at this point. We'll be looking at making some off season moves if we can't get it done before the dealine. Q: Brian, as always thanks for coming out. We hope to speak to you soon. A: Thanks a lot, always a pleasure! |

Interview with KNBR - Giants Radio - August 2017
Welcome back fans! As always once a month Interim General Manager Brian Corwin is joining us at the 12 o'clock hour. And we have a lot to talk about!
There is nothing better than baseball in September. Young guys get a chance to play for a playoff spot, championship races and rivalries start getting heated. And the pennant is just a month away! Q: Brian it's silly that we still call you an interim General Manager at this point in the season. You've been open with the fans, you've gotten your team into a position for a play off run, you're just 8 and a half games behind the Dodgers and you are testing the waters for a playoff run. What do you have in store for us this month? A: Well, this has been a very exciting run at my first year managing a MLB front office. I was blessed to step into an organization that had a well established culture, a well established group of guys, and a lot of veteran leadership from guys who knows what it takes to win a championship. Today we just called up 5 players from our Triple-A affiliate and I feel can make a difference as well as give some of our top-tier starts a chance to rest here and there, and I am excited, the fans are excited, i think everyone on the San Francisco side of the bay has something to be excited about. September 40-Man Active Roster Call Ups: AAA C Trevor Brown AAA 1B Chris Marrero AAA 2B Orlando Calixte AAA LF Gorkys Hernandez AAA RF Mac Williamson Q: You made a late season move to offload Nunni in exchange from some prospects. Can you tell us about the trade? A: Sure. We love Eduardo's work ethic and use of speed and defensive range but we had looked at a lot of factors that I think make a lot of sense once I lay them down for you. First we have an aging rotation, Matt Cain is 32 years old Cueto is 31 years old, and Samardijda is 32 years old. That isn't terribly old but if we were looking to keep any of these guys by time their replacement is ready they will be pushing their mid to late 30s realistically. Next you had to look at the money, like i said Nunni was a fan favorite, hes a hard working guy, and hes a go-getter, but he was asking more than I think our budget would allow, 28 million dollars over 6 for a total of 168 million dollars is a big check to back up for an older player. The fact that we could offload some of the burder on our payroll, pick up some young pictures with big futures ahead of them, and get Nunni to a winning team over at Boston...it's a win-win for everyone and I am glad that it worked out. Q: Mac Williamson is hitting about .271 with some power at the AAA level, Gorkys is hitting about .302, how do you see them fitting into the play off run in the month of September? A: Yes they are putting out some outstanding numbers at Triple-A ball this season, we feel they are more than ready for a big league spot but we have no where to put them in terms of starting potential realistically. They will be used as late inning defensive subs as well as rotational starters to give our core 3 a break when needed. They will definitely get a feel for playing at ATT park. Q: You have 10 spots open on the 40 man roster, and you cleared up quite a bit of money in the Nunez trade. Are there any plans for purchasing and last minute contracts? A: We'll have to see where we are at later in the month. I look at many factors but if we can get buy with limited impact on the payroll, we will have more room to make trades and signings during the off season. I know we have a lot of young guys itching for a top level contract, and they are more than deserving... but that's baseball. Q: As always Brian, its been a pleasure. A: My pleasure, I love coming out, and I am excited for what is ahead of us this month. Thanks for having me! |
