change of schedule

I haven't played this game for a while so I might be missing something.
But I remember in early versions you could for example choose 8 teams in the beginning setup of customized league, and different number of games (78 for example), there were only few other options. And after you already started the game you could change the schedule in league edit to as many games as you wanted, I want just 14 games (home & away in an 8 team league.. Now since the change of the game engine I cannot find this option? Was it removed?

After going through some files there I found "schedules" subfolder inside default_data and also data folder
Does editing these files have any influence on pre-defined league structure in creating custom game? I was unable to achieve any change.
