Compensation Picks

So in draft you fail to sign a player selected in the first three rounds you are given a compensation pick in next years draft.

So for example a team picks third in the first round in 2016, fails to come to an agreement with the player, in 2017 they get the third selection overall in 2017.

If the team can't agree with the player signed in 2017 who they signed with their compensation pick, do they get the pick again in 2018?

Not sure how it works out in-game. IRL, the team would NOT have been entitled to that pick in 2018 until the last couple of years. I believe that rule has changed, and you'd now get that pick in 2018, but not 2019 if you didn't sign that player.
