Signing free agents - contracts automatically sold

Hi guys, first post, new to the forum, searched for the info but couldn't find it so I apologized if it is explained somewhere.

I started a typical game as a GM / Manager with all the roster control settings set to myself. I chose a team in the Can Am league.

First attempt, I hired an Assistant GM, went and signed a bunch of players to try to improve the roster as I appear to have a free agent budget.

When I finally went to set my lineups, I realized that most of my starts had had their contracts sold to MLB teams automatically after free agent signings - sometimes even the player that had just been signed leaving me with an unplayable roster. Fired the assistant GM and then rage quit the game .

Second attempt, I went straight to the free agents with no assistant GM. Moved most of my scrubs to the reserve roster with future trading releasing in mind to give open spots to the free agents. After the first two free agents signed, the following free agents seemed to force an equivalent roster move where one of my good players was automatically sold to a MLB team ruining my plans.

What gives? I'm sure I'm reaching a player limit but I'm not sure what to do about it as nothing is telling me ( that I've found - I'm new ) that the incoming free agent will trigger an automatic roster move that I can't control. There are a bunch of players I'd rather release or trade away in 2 for 1 packages before my best players get their contracts sold to teams automatically.

The free agents are way too good to pass up as well...
