I'm in the off-season on January 3rd and I'm trying to claim a pitcher from the waiver wire, but I keep getting the message below.
I have tons of money available, I have by far the worst record in the league and the original team hasn't pulled him back, so that should eliminate all the reasons listed in the message. Another team has already claimed him, but I have a significantly worse record than them. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? Is it because there's a limit on the number of waiver claims by one team per off-season since he would be the fifth player I've claimed? Or does the waiver priority change from worst record to something else at some point? Or, am I maybe missing something SUPER obvious? Any help would be greatly appreciated! The original team pulled him back from waivers, I would guess.

I'm in commissioner mode and according to their "Waivers & DFA" tab they haven't and he's listed as claimed by the other team I mentioned with "irrevocable" in parenthesis next to his name. I also advanced to the next day and he's still listed on the waiver wire page and in the team "Waivers & DFA" tab as pictured below.

Is the claiming team in the same league as the waiving team?
And do they have the next worst record in baseball to your worst? I seem to recall that the same league has priority all things being relatively equal? Unless I am dreaming, I think that happened to me once. Had worst record, but was in the AL and an almost equally bad team in the NL snapped up a player ahead of me. Again, might be a dream too... |

Yes Winnipeg59 (good morning from Gimli) a team from the same league as the player being claimed takes priority over the won-loss record of the other.

Was just going to say something like that.
And to think twice before waiving as the player would have a better chance of being a competitor, all things equal. ![]() |

Or when the Leagues were actually separate Legal entities until 2000 so it made sense to not want players leaving your league for the other one. The idea as MLB as a unified organization is a relatively modern occurrence.
