Odd statistical season for starting rotation
I noticed something really strange about my Diamondbacks save. I just finished the 2021 season and I was looking over our end of year stats, because I only GM and was preparing for the off season. I noticed a couple of odd things about my rotation:
1. None of my starting pitchers missed a single start all season. Injury settings are completely vanilla, too. This was sort of a gap year for our rebuild, so I just picked 5 starters and let them pitch. I didn't even notice that they never got hurt once. 2. Even though they all made either 32 or 33 starts, they had oddly low numbers for innings pitched. I calculated that on average my starters only went 5.1 IP. When looking at league wide pitching stats, there were 44 SP with more IP than even our highest total, which was 190. My #2 starter, who had a decent season, only pitched 162 innings total in 32 starts. I think overall this is saying something about how detailed OOTP is, because I realized it was all likely caused by my bench coach. I'm technically the Manager and GM (I still like being able to set lineups), so the bench coach manages all of my games. When I went into his tendencies, I just now noticed he has a "very quick" hook for SP. I had no idea that these tendencies would have such an extreme impact on my team. Strategy wise I'm not sure how to feel, I appreciate my young starters staying healthy, but I also want them to pitch full games! |

Sorry to reply to my own post, but I have an update after more looking:
In the 3 seasons we have had this bench coach, my SPs have been ridiculously durable. Looking at my current staff, none of them have posted a season with this bench coach with under 30 starts. So out of the 11 SP seasons I looked at, every single one of them stayed healthy. But only one of these seasons had over 200 IP, which only requires a starter to go about 6 innings on average. I'm not sure if I should be giving this guy an extension or looking for a new bench coach! |

Would be curious to get an overview of how the bullpen did, because in order for your bench coach's quick-hook strategy to be successful, the bullpen would need to be good, deep, and durable.

Last year's Blue Jays are a good real life comparison...for one year anyway!

Not really 4 of 5 BJ starters averaged over 6 IP/start.

BTW, check out the K/9 on Michael Kopech. 131 K's out of the bullpen. Last edited by JackD; 05-27-2017 at 07:20 PM. Reason: Kopech Comment |
