Tough Contract Negotations?

Nearing the end of my first Mets season I decided to offer Neil Walker an extension. Currently he is making 17.5 mil. Negotiations began with an 8 year 18 mil year contract. Obviously absurd for a 31 year old guy like Walker. I came back with 4 year,18 mil per and this was his response:

I see his morale is good...he is going to regret not taking your offer!

Tbh the player doesn't think about that. He's just looking for security + money. If you wanted to lock him in you have to either:
A: get closer to the total amount of money he requested (8 x 18M in this case)
B: give him more years and a bit more money
C: Meet his demands.

I would avoid purchasing FAs over 30.

Actually I offered him the extension mid season so we are not there yet. Season just about to end so we will see what kind of mood mr. Walker is in next time we approach him.

I had a bidding war for an international free agent. He originally demanded $5M, the max. I met his demand. Later, he told me someone else offered him more money - $5M. So I countered with $5M. This happened two more times. He finally signed with me for $5M.

That happens a lot with the international guys, the hard cap makes it random on where the guy ends up.
