The Incredible Vanishing Player Bug.
As a historical simmer, I have been less than happy with OOTP5. Lots of cool new improvements but still many annoyances kill my enjoyment.
Defensive import from the Lahman database is still broken. Positions don't import correctly, some are missing, and fielding percentages are wrong. It is easier to enter the data from www.baseballreference.com when correcting errors with the new interface. Small comfort. Then there is the maddening vanishing player bug that Steely Glint has been posting about. I import the players to make up my 1871 league and pitchers show up when viewing "All" but some do not show up where it counts, on the "Active Roster" screen. I'm in season two now and suddenly a team which has been bug free to date has 7 of the 22 players on the ML roster vanish including both pitchers. Pull out your hair exasperation at this point. Hopefully Steely Glint has been seen and heard and this joy killing bug gets squashed in the next update. I'd been anticipating the new release as much as any but this historical sim freak is more than mildly annoyed.

It happened with me in a historical sim....Christy Mathweson had won 4 Pitcher of the Year Awards and then vanished.....
I looked in league setup "find players" nothing.... I looked in the Hall of Fame "retired players" No report of injury in League News.... That has been the only time I've seen it but I have been mainly trying yo get my fictional league going... By the way, that was the day OOTP 5 was released, so it was pre-5.01 |

Steve, it happened to me in a fictional league created with 5.01.
Houston, we have a problem.

Just read the update of Steely Glints thread, so I thought I would detail the steps I take in creating my 1871 league.
I run a custom league, make the year 1870, draft 15 players for each team and sim out a 60 game schedule. When the season concludes, I drop all the players from each team into the FA pool and delete them all. I also delete all records that the game generated from the first season as I am only concerned with the 1871 season that will follow. I then advance to the next season and import real MLB rookies that made up the first season of professional baseball in 1871. 115 players for 8 teams. The league is a pair of 4 team leagues. Each team ends up with 1-2 pitchers as one pitcher would throw 95% of his teams innings that first season. Invariably, 3-4 of these 8 teams will show all their pitchers as being missing from the active roster. They are viewable from the "All" screen but of no use as they are not "Active". I used this workaround to play 1871 leagues in OOTP4 and it ran smoothly, no worries. Now in OOTP5, I get the vanishing player bug, players not visible on the active screen and invariably they are pitchers. As I stated before, when you click "All" they are viewable.

OK, I'll try to track it down once I'm healthy again (got the flu). I hope to get one patch out (5.02) before the big update (5.1)...

Darkhorse .. can you see if those players export with my CSV Exporter? If so, I would suggest sending the CSV to Markus with the Player ID of the player that disappeared. Might help him track this down.

Thank GOD I'm not the only one seeing this!
Er.... not that I want your players to disappear or anything, darkhorse....... I'm having the same problem with my solo historical league (an 1871 league also), and so is one of my online leagues. Also, I'm glad to hear that it's happening in seasons other than 1871.... I was afraid we'd just get ignored on this if it was only a 19th century thing.

I'll create a new league and doublecheck the vanishing players involved to be sure. Also, in my latest 1871 league, in season two, I had a team that was bug free to that point, suddenly have 7 of its 22 players vanish from the "Active" roster. They are always viewable when you click the "All" button. But since they are now invisible on the "Active" roster, they have effectively vanished.

Right, so once a league is corrupted, run the CSV Exporter and see if that vanished player shows up. If it does, Markus can have a concrete example of how the data looks for that vanished player.
If I have my guess right, you'll see a blank TEAM_ID.

I figured out a workaround to get these vanished players back on the "Active" roster. I mention this because you may have wondered how I simmed through to season two.
I gave each vanished pitcher a field position. Then I clicked "Run Computer Manager on All Teams" and the AI put these players on the active roster at their new field position. I then put the teams in Human Manager mode and changed them back to their pitcher role and deleted the field position role I had created earlier. They could now be placed in the rotation. However, it was necessary to keep the teams involved on Human Manager for the whole season or the AI would send them back into vanished status. Once the 1871 season ended, and the season was advanced, the players involved no longer needed my intervention to stay on the Active roster. That was until near midseason when suddenly one of the teams had 7 of their 22 players vanish. Including several field position players for the first time. Uggh!
