Player Evaluation

I fully understand that a player will certainly come to a halt as they're aging. However, Shawn Kelley, my closer on the Nationals, had a career year and led the major leagues in saves, yet has now dropped down in stars and is only being considered a setup man by my manager. On the other hand, Anthony Rendon batted .297 with 29 home runs and actually went down in potential and overall. He also posted a .368 OBP and a 5.7 WAR. Am I missing something? This is making me tempted to enter commissioner mode and change their ratings. I have noticed this issue in past OOTP games.

That depends how good your scout is and the overall and potential are basically relative to the MLB at their position. As far as I know the stars are basically relative so if the average talent at the position goes up, then your player won't be rated as highly as before when he was above the average. That and combined with the inaccuracies of scouting could explain how a player could drop in stars. As long as their tools are about the same, then you know they haven't really decreased in skill.

I assume their performance is only influenced by their ratings as opposed to the stars they have. For example, if they have a 60 contact rating.

But unless you set scouting to 100% accurate, you don't know is that rating is correct or not.

If Rendon drops down to .270 next year, you might want to thank your scout for the heads up. If Rendon hits .330 next year, you might want to fire the scout. In either case, a scout that just tells you the same thing the stat line does is a scout that isn't earning his paycheck.
