By any chance, has the number of ethnicities been increased?

Now that we'll soon have the ability to create international tournaments, a glaring weakness in the database's existing ethnicities/name files has been exposed - there are only 40 allowed in the game. There are, what, 190+ nations in the world? And yet, we are limited to just 40 ethno-name combinations. Not cool.

While it's true that these files can be edited to our heart's content, there's currently no way to add a new ethnicity to the game without first deleting or overwriting an existing one. This is something that will need to be addressed as we move forward with the Tournament feature.

In addition, there are two existing ethno-name combos that are far too generic to be even remotely adequate in our new interactive, tourney-capable OOTP universe: "Hispanic" and "African". As anyone who has ever traveled across Sub-Saharan can attest to, there is no singular "African" ethnicity, least of all one singular set of naming practices across all the diverse groups that inhabit this part of the world. It's a pinch too big to directly insert here and still do it justice, but check out this Ethnolinguistic map of Sub-Saharan Africa for additional info:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...roups_1996.jpg

Ditto for the "Hispanic" ethno-name set. If you want to know how broad of a brush this particular combo is, just bear in mind that Spain, a European nation with radically different demographics than every nation in Latin America (with the possible exception of Argentina and Uruguay) draws 100% from the "Hispanic" group in the game.

Check out this comparison between OOTP's one-size-fits-all "Hispanic" set, and the actual demographic data from several nations that draw on it for ethnicities & names :

Quote:

OOTP:

1,Hispanic,(african)300,(asian)0,(east indian)0,(caucasian)50,(hispanic)650

The Real World:

Spain:
White Spaniards 88%

Mexico: Mestizo (mixed White & Native American) 60-80%, White 9-17%, Black 2%

Cuba:
65.05% White, 23.84% Mixed Race (Black & White), Black 10.08%, Asian 1.02%

Venezuela:
Mestizo 67%, White 21%, Black 10%, Amerindian 2%

Panama:
70% is Mestizo (mixed white, Native American), 14% is primarily black and mulattoes, 10% white and 6% Native Americans

Puerto Rico:
75.8% White, 24.2% non-white

Columbia:
49% Mestizo (European and Amerindian, 37% White (European).10,6% Afro-Colombian, includes Mulatto (European and Black/African) and Zambo (African and Amerindian), 3.4% Amerindian.

Peru:
Mestizos: 47% Amerindians: 31% European: 18.5% Afro-Peruvians: 2% Asians and others: 1%

Argentina:
White (mostly Spanish and Italian) 97%; mestizo, Amerindian, other 3%
As should be (hopefully) evident from the above data, the current "Hispanic" ethnicity is completely inadequate. It's especially exposed now that we can create tournaments between nations. The solution would be to allow for more ethnicities / name set combos. I hope it's not too difficult an undertaking from a programing perspective, because this really does need to be addressed eventually.

I have seen various nationalities using wrong ethnic names that's a pet peeve for me .... best example being Israeli player having muslim names or an Italian player having a French or Spanish name both players from foreign lands.

No such thing as a "Muslim name". Islam is a religion, not an ethnicity. Muslims come in all "races". If you mean "Arabic names", there are Israeli citizens of Arabic ethnicity. There are also Italian citizens with "French and Spanish names", just like in the United States and other countries.

Infractions: 0/2 (3)
ethnicities/name files

Please keep an option to keep these files as it is now. I have no offense to adding 1,000, but please let us that want to keep it as is now. Please don't force this on those that don't want to have 190 different ethnicities. Exactly how many of these 190 ethnicities actually play MLB or baseball alone in any country? Cricket is not included.

Thanks

And exactly how many of the existing ethicities in the game play baseball? Has Turkey or Sweden suddenly become baseball hothouses?

The central point is that the current number and selection of ethnolinguistic groups in the game isn't even adequate for what we have now, let alone for a game with a global database that has been suddenly made smaller with a tournament builder. Can you, as a baseball fan who obviously values realism above Cricket-like contrivances, honestly look at that demographic data posted above from Spanish-speaking (and many baseball playing) nations and still say with a straight face that there isn't a problem with game's ethno-name sets?

Sorry, but having a singular "Hispanic" and "African" ethno-name set is as ridiculous as having a generic, all-encompassing "European" or "Asian" one.

Oh, and BTW, no one here is requesting that Markus sit down and hammer out 190 individual namesets. Just increase the current number from 40 to something more reasonable and we'll do the rest.

Increase the number to 256 and leave some of them blank. Same with namesets.

Obviously the ability to handle more/accurate name-sets would be nice... that said the name-sets/ethnicities used and frequency that they are used are set in the world.dat file. If you feel that some of the defaults aren't necessary (say Scandanavian), then you have the ability to create your name-set and simply edit the data files to reflect the nations that should have the newly created data set.

I remember the days when there were only two ethnicities: Cro-Magnon and Neanderthal. Doesn't seem that long ago.

problem is like for what you say arab names for Israel is the only choice you get .... rare if ever you get a Israeli name .... of which is my point and In Israel I rarely IF ever hear of a arab name there. and I never heard of a Arab named Israeli playing baseball. and in this game all you get is arab names. that's the pet peeve and you talk semantics on Italians having French Spanish names .... In itally it is Rare to find a French name outside of the NW side of Itally

my point is we don't get players from different country nationalities playing BASEBALL IE arabs names in Israel or French names with Italy teams

Someone made a Jewish name file (which is what I think you mean by "Israeli names"). You could search for it and use it in your game.

I have no idea whether any Israeli citizens with "Arabic names" play baseball, or not. Don't really care. Was just addressing your point that seemed to suggest that countries should only have citizens of one ethnicity. Around 20% of the people of Israel are Arabs...some of them Christian...most Muslims...some, probably no religious affiliation.

It's 2017, and people move here and there all the time. They use whatever surname they choose, name their children as they like and so on...not really a big deal.

On a separate note, why do people keep peeves as "pets"? Goldfish, gerbils, dogs, etc. not good enough?
