Fan Interest and Popular Players
In OOTP17, players who are popular do not increase Fan Interest when they are signed or traded for; only if you extend their contracts. You still take a hit for losing them, but don't gain anything for acquiring popular players.
Don't know if this was intentional for 17, or a bug (the post in the Bug Report forum was never addressed) but this should be changed for 18. Acquiring nationally popular players should result in a temporary increase to fan interest.

Also, the negative hit to fan interest when one of your old players is released and then signs with another team is way too big. For example, in an online league I'm in, I didn't re-sign a 38 yo DH way past his prime (previous year WAR was barely positive). He signed with another team and my fan interest dropped 5 points and projected season ticket sales decreased and projected attendance went from 36,000 to 29,000. The financial hit was significant. I'd really like to see this improved in OOTP 18.

It has to be a bit more complex to GM than just getting the best players one can find. Having to consider, "I can do better than him at DH, especially at the salary he's demanding, but we'll lose fan support if I let him go" is a tradeoff you should have to make. Sometimes you should have to hold on to a player who's not the best you can get, because you know the fan reaction to letting him go will hurt you more than the player's poor production. If letting him go produces extra wins, you'll get some of the lost fan support back due to winning. But if they make the mechanic of losing a popular player weaker, you'll always maximize fan support just by putting the best players on the field you can...and that's too simple. I agreed with the original post, that signing a nationally popular-enough player needs to give a real boost that it doesn't now, but that's a different matter. |

While we're on the subject, it seems like national and local popularity are almost always the same. It seems like more guys should have some local popularity, usually more than national.

Yeah, there should be more heart & soul type guys without much talent that are popular locally and unknown or insignificant nationally.

This should be fixed in OOTP18
