Players Upset About Playing Time

When playing in GM-only mode, why do I get so many emails about a lack of playing time? Shouldn't these discussions happen with the manager? I understand my role if the manager doesn't listen; however, even then, there is no option for me to "discuss a specific player" with the coaches.

So when a player complains, I'm stuck "forcing him as a starter" (unrealistic), trading the player or player that's blocking the complainer (ala Billy Beane), or firing the coach and hoping the new coach sees the complainer as a better option.

I think it's completely realistic that players would bypass the manager if they can't get what they want. I've done that in real life. In professional sports this is where the "play me or trade me" demand comes from. Smart players do it privately. Dumb players do it in public and get buried on a last place team.

As GM that's what you get the big bucks for.

you can live with him being a loudmouth, too. you don't have to acquiesce to every email dealing with morale or player personality... the big picture should trump these things quite often. you do have to live with the minor negative factor that it applies due to the guy being unhappy and it may change future plans, but that's life. you bend and make him happy or you don't.

different costs and benefits for each choice. that will dictate the right choice for each situation. i wouldn't blindly and exclusively do one or the other.
