The end of spring training when the waiver wire is full of guys being DFA'd is a possibility, but it also usually means most, if not all, teams have room on the 40-man to claim a player. The only other option is to monitor teams' 40-man rosters and try to DFA him when most teams have a full 40-man. The most likely time for that is the day after the Rule 5 draft, as all Rule 5-eligible prospects will have been added to the 40-man, plus any players taken in the Rule 5 draft.
